Lionel Messi transformed disappointment into another unforgettable chapter of his legendary career on Monday, scoring twice as Argentina defeated Austria 2-0 in Texas to advance to the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Argentina captain entered the match carrying the weight of expectation, and briefly the frustration of a missed penalty, before responding exactly as the world has come to expect.

His first goal made history, moving Messi beyond every other player in men’s World Cup history with 17 career goals. His second, deep into stoppage time, sealed Argentina’s victory and pushed his total to 18.

Missed chance fuels Messi’s response

The night could have unfolded very differently.

With the match still scoreless, Messi stepped forward from the penalty spot but sent his attempt wide, leaving the 39-year-old star visibly disappointed.

Reflecting afterward, Messi admitted the miss affected him.

“Today there was a moment where I was very angry about the penalty because I missed and I struck it very badly,” Messi said.

However, the Argentina captain quickly redirected that frustration into determination.

“Luckily, we were able to turn the situation around, take the lead, and take three very important points,” he added.

Messi’s penalty struggles have been an unusual storyline in an otherwise extraordinary career. He also saw a penalty saved by Wojciech Szczesny during Argentina’s 2022 World Cup victory over Poland and missed from the spot during the 2018 tournament.

A historic finish at the home of the Cowboys

After Austria frustrated Argentina early, Messi eventually found the breakthrough.

In the 38th minute, the Inter Miami forward swept home the opening goal, sending Argentina supporters inside the home of the Dallas Cowboys into celebration.

The strike pushed Messi ahead of the previous World Cup scoring record holders and further strengthened his claim among the greatest players in football history.

Despite controlling the match, Argentina could not fully pull away after halftime.

Austria, who entered the contest with confidence after defeating World Cup debutants Jordan 3-1, remained disciplined and created moments of danger of its own.

Austria pushes back, but Messi delivers the final blow

The European side refused to collapse and tested Argentina’s defense with several promising attacks.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni’s team, however, maintained control and eventually found the decisive moment.

Deep into second-half stoppage time, Messi completed his brace to remove any doubt and secure another important victory.

The result guaranteed Argentina’s progression, while also strengthening its position at the top of Group J.

Veteran star continues defying expectations

Messi’s appearance at this World Cup was not guaranteed.

The Argentina captain delayed his decision on competing in his sixth tournament and arrived with concerns surrounding a hamstring issue.

Those doubts disappeared almost immediately.

Messi opened the tournament with a hat trick in Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Algeria and has continued producing decisive moments ever since.

Now approaching his 39th birthday on Wednesday, the superstar continues to redefine what is possible at football’s highest level.

Argentina focused on perfection

Messi described the victory over Austria as a difficult test in a tournament where margins remain extremely small.

“A very hard victory. The truth is that we knew that it was going to be a match of great intensity,” he said.

He added: “This World Cup is all very even games… no one gives anything away. Today there was also a lot of intensity.”

Argentina will advance as Group J winners if Jordan fails to defeat Algeria, setting up a knockout-stage meeting with the second-place team from Group H, currently led by Uruguay.

Scaloni may consider resting his captain against Jordan, but Messi insisted Argentina’s mentality will not change.

“We’re Argentina, and we’re always going to look to win against any opponent,” he said.

For Messi, another record has fallen, but the pursuit continues.
