BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – In a significant leadership shift for West Indies cricket, Roston Chase has been appointed the new captain of the men’s Test team, becoming the 10th Barbadian to earn the prestigious role.

His appointment comes at a pivotal time for the regional side, with a daunting home Test series against world number one Australia looming large on the horizon, beginning June 25.

Kraigg Brathwaite steps aside, but stands tall behind Chase

After four years at the helm, former captain Kraigg Brathwaite abruptly stepped down from the leadership post on March 31, leaving big shoes to fill. But rather than stepping away quietly, Brathwaite has chosen to use his voice—and his platform—to lift up his successor.

In a statement posted on social media, Brathwaite offered not just congratulations but a stirring endorsement of Chase’s character and readiness to lead.

“I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Roston Chase on his appointment as the new West Indies Test captain.

Wearing the maroon and leading this proud team in the longest format of the game is no easy task – I know that better than most,” Brathwaite said.

A call for regional solidarity

Brathwaite’s message was more than ceremonial. It was a rallying cry to the Caribbean public to stand united behind their new leader. With honesty born from experience, Brathwaite acknowledged the steep climb Chase now faces.

“The pressures are real, the expectations are high, and the path is rarely smooth. But what makes the journey possible and worthwhile is knowing that the region is behind you every step of the way,” he stated.

Confidence in character: Chase the right man for the moment

In describing Chase, Brathwaite spoke not of statistics or tactics, but of inner strength and quiet leadership—qualities often overlooked, but vital for steering a team through turbulent waters.

“Roston is a man of composure, character, and quiet strength. He’s earned this opportunity through commitment and perseverance, and I have no doubt he will lead with integrity and determination,” Brathwaite said.

With the Windies set to battle one of the game’s fiercest teams, Brathwaite's words offered both a personal endorsement and a blueprint for collective faith.

“We’re with you”: A captain’s endorsement, a region’s responsibility

As the baton changes hands, Brathwaite left his fellow Barbadian with a powerful message—and a charge to the people of the Caribbean:

“Now, more than ever, he deserves our full support. Let’s rally behind him. Let’s show him that the people of the Caribbean believe in him and in the future of West Indies cricket.

Congratulations once again, skipper. We’re with you.”

With a three-Test series against Australia fast approaching, Roston Chase’s leadership will be tested from the very first delivery. But as the Windies prepare to write a new chapter, one thing is clear: the former captain has passed on more than just the armband—he’s passed on belief.
