ST. JOHN’S, Antigua — A bold new chapter has begun for West Indies cricket. Following an unprecedented, meticulously structured evaluation process, Roston Chase has been appointed as the new West Indies Test Captain, with Jomel Warrican named Vice-Captain, ahead of the upcoming home series against Australia in June.
This historic announcement comes as part of Cricket West Indies’ (CWI) sweeping transformation of its leadership selection approach—an approach that has turned heads for its innovation, depth, and alignment with global best practices.
A revolutionary selection framework
Recognizing that leadership is not just about wearing the armband—but about culture, clarity, and long-term impact—CWI launched a multi-dimensional, data-informed process to identify the right leaders for the Test squad. Gone are the days of instinct-driven decisions; in their place stands a model of transparency, accountability, and strategic alignment with modern cricketing values.
“The selection process is one of the most comprehensive and forward-thinking we have undertaken,” stated CWI President Dr. Kishore Shallow.
“I am deeply impressed by the professionalism, objectivity, and strategic thinking that shaped the final decision. It sets a new benchmark for leadership appointments in West Indies cricket.”
The road to leadership: Intense evaluation of top contenders
The process began with a shortlist of six distinguished players: John Campbell, Tevin Imlach, Joshua Da Silva, Justin Greaves, Roston Chase, and Jomel Warrican. These candidates were assessed on several fronts, from prior Test experience to their leadership track records and team dynamics.
Shai Hope, who currently captains the ODI and T20I sides, respectfully withdrew his name from consideration to focus on his current dual responsibilities.
Each shortlisted candidate underwent psychometric evaluations, structured tactical interviews, and assessments of communication style, team culture philosophy, and behavioral aptitude. The high-level panel steering this process included Head Coach Daren Sammy, Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe, and Enoch Lewis, Chairman of the Cricket Strategy and Officiating Committee.
Final selections were made using a weighted scoring system across six core areas: Leadership, Team respect, Cricketing knowledge, Personal conduct, Media and communication, and Psychometric results.
Those who rose to the top were recommended to the CWI Board of Directors, which gave its unanimous approval during today’s meeting.
A captain with purpose, a vice-captain with grit
With a calm demeanor, tactical sharpness, and the respect of his teammates, Roston Chase emerged as the leader to take the West Indies Test team into a new era. His appointment, coupled with the steady presence of Jomel Warrican as vice-captain, reflects the team’s intent to combine composure with competitive fire.
“I fully endorse this appointment,” said Head Coach Daren Sammy.
“Our new captain has earned the respect of his peers, understands the responsibility that comes with the role, and has shown the leadership qualities we need to take this team forward. I urge fans across the region to rally behind him—we’re building something special.”
A bold step toward the future
This leadership transition is more than a personnel change—it’s a strategic pivot. CWI sees this rigorous captaincy selection model as the blueprint for future leadership appointments across all formats, aiming to cultivate a culture of intentionality, excellence, and performance-driven leadership.
In expressing its gratitude, CWI saluted all candidates for their professionalism, integrity, and commitment to the West Indies cause.
