JetBlue expands daily flights to Saint Lucia, bolstering tourism and local economy

On June 13, a significant expansion of JetBlue’s operations was celebrated at Hewanorra International Airport in Saint Lucia, marking the commencement of the airline's new daily nonstop service from New York.
This event was a collaborative celebration involving the Ministry of Tourism, Investment, Creative Industries, Culture & Information, the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority, the Saint Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority, and the Saint Lucia Hospitality and Tourism Association.
A milestone arrival
The evening's highlight was the arrival of flight B6 781 from John F. Kennedy International Airport at 10:09 PM.
This flight not only symbolizes the strengthening partnership between JetBlue and Saint Lucia but also the commitment of both entities to enhancing visitor access to the island.
The occasion was marked by a ceremonial ribbon cutting attended by key figures, including the Minister of Tourism, Hon. Dr. Ernest Hilaire, and other dignitaries.
A warm Lucian welcome
Passengers disembarking from the inaugural flight were greeted with more than just the usual pleasantries.
They received special packages and were treated to an array of Saint Lucian culinary delights, including cocoa tea and coconut-filled turnovers, providing a taste of the island's rich culinary heritage right upon arrival.
Economic and cultural benefits
The expanded service is not just a win for travelers seeking convenience; it is a significant economic booster for Saint Lucia.
Minister Hilaire highlighted the economic advantages of this initiative, noting that it enhances connectivity without the need for minimum revenue guarantees, benefiting local businesses and creating employment opportunities.
The service also facilitates greater travel and shopping options for Saint Lucian nationals.
Promoting Saint Lucia
In conjunction with the new flight, a familiarization trip is being hosted for top-selling travel agents from the New York area. This initiative is designed to increase tourism by acquainting agents with what Saint Lucia has to offer.
Thaddeus M. Antoine, Chairman of the Saint Lucia Tourism Authority, emphasized the broader strategy to boost airlift capacity and meet the rising demand for travel to the island.
The plan includes a significant increase in room availability and ongoing negotiations to expand and introduce new airline services.
Commemorating the occasion
The event also saw JetBlue pilots Captain Bill Johnson and First Officer Tommy Ferreras receiving a commemorative plaque, celebrating the launch of the service, which promises to enhance the connection between New York and Saint Lucia daily until July 23, 2024.
