JDF soldier accidentally shoots himself at St. Andrew checkpoint

A soldier from the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) is in hospital after shooting himself in the foot at a checkpoint in St Andrew.

Reports are that the soldier was inside a tent when the incident occurred early Thursday morning.

The incident was confirmed by Senior Superintendent Kirk Ricketts, commander of the St. Andrew South police division who said the soldier’s service weapon was discharged and he was shot in the region of his ankle.

The JDF member was taken to hospital; his injury is not considered life threatening.
