Haitian schools operated by abducted nuns shut down indefinitely
All educational institutions under the administration of the Sisters of Sainte-Anne in Haiti have been closed indefinitely.
This follows last Friday’s abduction of six nuns.
No information surrounding the abduction
According to reports, authorities said no information or a ransom demand has been made public regarding the release of the eight people, including the six nuns.
Abduction in Port-au-Prince
The abduction occurred in the heart of Port-au-Prince, as gunmen intercepted a minibus, taking both passengers and the driver hostage.
This brazen act highlights the escalating security challenges facing the nation’s capital.
General strike announced
Responding to this alarming incident, the Anti-Corruption Union Brigade has declared a general strike set to take place from January 29th to 31st.
This strike seeks to address the mounting threat posed by criminal gangs and protest against the perceived inaction of Prime Minister Dr. Ariel Henry’s government in addressing the pressing security concerns plaguing Haiti.
In his Angelus address on Sunday, Pope Francis urged the release of the hostages, including the nuns, who are members of the Sisters of St Anne congregation.
