Guyana’s Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has issued a warning to fellow regional leaders regarding their negotiations with Venezuela.

Dr. Jagdeo’s cautionary stance comes in light of Venezuela’s looming threat of re-imposed oil sanctions, a consequence of their failure to uphold their end of the agreement, specifically in regard to ensuring full participation in the upcoming elections.

United States takes action against Venezuela

Dr Jagdeo issued the warning following the recent action taken by the United States against Venezuela after the decision of its top court to uphold a ban that blocks the leading opposition hopeful, Maria Corina Machado, from running for president.

Alleged violation of the Barbados agreements

Dr. Jagdeo has asserted that the recent actions undertaken by the Maduro regime may be construed as a violation of the Barbados agreements.

These agreements, inked in October of the previous year in Bridgetown, aimed to address several critical issues, with a primary focus on ensuring the conduct of free and fair elections.

Central to this endeavor was the imperative to allow elected opposition leaders to participate in these pivotal polls.

The Barbados Agreement

The Barbados Agreement is a pair of agreements signed by the Maduro government and the Venezuelan opposition in October last year in Bridgetown.
