Gunfire erupts in downtown Port-au-Prince

Heavy gunfire broke out in downtown Port-au-Prince on Monday as police engaged in a fierce battle with gang members near the National Palace.

The clash, which lasted several hours, plunged Haiti’s city into chaos and fear.

Police officer shot as gangs overwhelm

Amid the chaos, reports emerged that at least one police officer was shot during the confrontation.

Witnesses described a harrowing scene as officers were forced to abandon an armored vehicle, which was later set ablaze by the assailants.

Scores of people found themselves trapped amidst the crossfire, while others managed to escape the area, desperate to evade the violence unfolding around them.

Terror grips the streets

The situation on the ground remained tense, with residents fearing for their lives as gunfire echoed through the streets of downtown Port-au-Prince.

One anonymous individual, speaking to The Associated Press, recounted being stranded for hours until police finally intervened, providing a lifeline amid the chaos.

Ongoing chaos in Haiti

The latest eruption of violence comes on the heels of a series of brazen attacks by powerful gangs targeting critical government infrastructure.

In recent weeks, police stations have been torched, the main international airport remains closed due to attacks, and two major prisons have been stormed, leading to the release of over 4,000 inmates.

Mounting casualties and political turmoil

The toll of the ongoing violence is staggering, with over 1,500 reported deaths and hundreds more injured as of March 22, according to the UN.

The escalating crisis has forced Prime Minister Ariel Henry to announce his impending resignation, pending the establishment of a transitional council tasked with selecting a new leadership.

Political wrangling amid chaos

Even as violence rages on the streets, political maneuvering continues behind closed doors.

The proposed transitional council, aimed at navigating Haiti through this tumultuous period, faces mounting scrutiny and legal challenges.

Concerns have been raised over its constitutional legitimacy, further complicating efforts to stabilize the country.

Uncertain future

As Haiti grapples with unprecedented levels of violence and political uncertainty, the road ahead remains fraught with challenges.

The government’s attempts to establish a transitional council and pave the way for a new leadership face an uphill battle, with no clear resolution in sight amidst the chaos gripping the nation.
