Fire ravages hotels and homes in Guyanese gold mining community

In the early hours of Sunday morning, a fire wreaked havoc in Eteringbang, a bustling gold mining community on the Guyana-Venezuela border.

The inferno claimed four structures, including two hotels and two residential houses, leaving behind a trail of destruction yet miraculously resulting in no injuries.

Origins of the fire

Initial reports hinted at a malfunctioning electricity generator as the catalyst.

The Guyana Fire Service, however, said the fire that started at about 3 AM was of “unknown” origin.

A community member’s brave stand

Reports are that a 52-year-old resident of Eteringbang Landing witnessed the flames emerging from the circuit board area of his two-storey, 10-room building.

Despite his desperate attempts to douse the fire with water, the blaze proved relentless, swiftly engulfing his property and spreading to adjacent abandoned structures.

The Fire Service said that the estimated value of the damage remains unknown, even as investigations into the cause of the fire continue.
