President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali approved the extension to ensure a thorough and comprehensive conclusion to the probe, as confirmed by Javed Shaddick, the Secretary of the Commission.

Focusing on comprehensive examination

Initially, the investigation was allocated a two-month duration set to end in October.

However, due to the intricate nature of the investigation and to ensure that all aspects are meticulously examined, the deadline has been extended to mid-November.

Evidence gathering

Shaddick further said that throughout the inquiry, 29 individuals have come forward to testify, contributing crucial information to uncover the truths behind the tragic incident.

Reports are that the Commission is in the process of reviewing these accounts to ascertain if further testimonies are needed.

On-site investigation

A pivotal part of the inquiry involves an on-site inspection scheduled in Mahdia.

The Commission plans to revisit the locations pertinent to the incident, such as the dormitory, fire station, hospital, and the Regional Democratic Office. Their objective is to glean comprehensive insights into the environmental and circumstantial factors surrounding the tragic fire.

Those who played a role in saving the children’s lives, including the dorm mother, will be present during the visit and may be questioned further if  necessary, Shaddick said.

He added that attorney Keoma Griffith, who is leading the evidence in the inquiry, has indicated that his final report submission to the Commission will occur either on Friday or Monday.

The Commission is led by retired Major General Joe Singh and includes attorney Kim Kyte-Thomas and Chair of the National Toshaos Council, Derrick John.

The Commission has begun the preparation of its report that is to be submitted to President Ali following the completion of the extended investigation period.

Tragic incident claimed lives

Reports are that in May, 19 girls and a five-year-old boy perished in the fire that destroyed the school building.

It was reported that the fire was started by a 15-year-old student who has since been charged with 20 counts of murder.

She has been on remand since May.
