Curaçao entered the World Cup seeking a moment to remember. They found it through the hands of goalkeeper Eloy Room.

The 37-year-old goalkeeper delivered one of the tournament’s greatest individual performances, making 15 saves to help Curaçao secure their first-ever World Cup point in a dramatic 0-0 draw against a heavily favored Ecuador side on Saturday.

Room’s performance matched the men’s World Cup record for saves in a single match since official save statistics began in 1966, equaling the mark set by Tim Howard for the United States against Belgium in 2014.

After conceding seven goals in Curaçao’s opening match against Germany, Room responded with a performance that immediately placed his name among the tournament’s most memorable goalkeeping displays.

“It’s going to be an insane memory,” Room said. “You don’t think about it when you do it, but of course it’s going to be something you look back to. For me as a goalkeeper, this is almost a perfect game.”

Ecuador attack relentlessly, but Room refuses to break

The match quickly became a one-man battle between Ecuador’s attacking pressure and Room’s extraordinary resistance.

Room announced himself early, denying Enner Valencia on a dangerous breakaway in the third minute before producing another major stop against the Ecuador forward in the 20th minute.

As the match progressed, Ecuador continued creating opportunities, but each chance ended the same way, with Room standing firm.

In the second half, the difficulty level increased.

Room stopped a close-range attempt from Gonzalo Plata in the 59th minute, denied Valencia again in the 65th, and then kept out substitute Kevin Rodríguez just one minute later.

Ecuador finished with 28 shots and 15 efforts on target, making them the first men’s World Cup team since at least 1966 to record 15 shots on target without scoring.

Ecuador coach Sebastián Beccacece admitted the result was difficult to explain.

“In football, there are things that simply can’t be explained,” Beccacece said. “The result speaks for itself, so anything else I say could sound like an excuse. Today, we had to win, and we didn’t.”

A historic night built on teamwork

Although Room’s individual brilliance stole the spotlight, the goalkeeper insisted the achievement belonged to the entire Curaçao team.

“A little bit annoyed that I don’t have the record from Tim Howard, but I think he was sweating in front of the TV because I was close,” Room said with a smile.

“But no, it’s unbelievable. And I cannot do it alone. I did it with the team and my defenders and the midfielders, strikers. We did it as a team.”

Room, who previously won an MLS Cup with Columbus Crew and now plays for Miami FC, joked that his performance deserved permanent recognition.

“I think I need a statue in Curaçao now,” he said.

A proud moment for Curaçao on football’s biggest stage

The historic occasion was witnessed by special guests, including King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, who attended after watching the Dutch team defeat Sweden earlier in the day.

Because Curaçao is a constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the royal presence carried special meaning.

“They were even dancing in the locker room to our music,” Room said. “That’s unreal that they witnessed this game.”

Curaçao coach Dick Advocaat praised the progress of a team that had already created history by qualifying.

“You know how far we’ve come, basically from nothing,” Advocaat said. “And then you come here and play an away match in front of 60,000 people and draw 0-0. All you can feel is pride at how far we’ve come.”

Ecuador left frustrated while Curaçao embrace a landmark achievement

While Ecuador goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez had fewer saves to make, he was still forced into two important interventions to deny Curaçao’s Leandro Bacuna and Livano Comenencia.

As the match entered its final stages, Ecuador struggled to find a breakthrough, while Curaçao packed behind the ball and defended with everything they had.

Room’s final save count remained at 15, just short of surpassing Howard’s disputed mark of 16.

However, the goalkeeper valued the clean sheet and the historic point more than the record.

The result leaves Ecuador needing a victory against Germany on Thursday in East Rutherford, New Jersey, to advance, while Curaçao face Ivory Coast with their own qualification hopes still alive.

Even if their journey ends there, Advocaat believes his players have already achieved something unforgettable.

“The first match affected me much more because we lost 7-1,” he said. “Yet the supporters welcomed our players with incredible enthusiasm. Normally, after a result like that, you get booed. Instead, the exact opposite happened.”

“Today, you saw the team give something back to those supporters. I thought that was a beautiful moment.”

For Curaçao, it was more than a draw, it was a night when a small nation stood tall on football’s biggest stage.
