Diplomats meet with T&T PM to discuss security

Issues related to national security dominated a meeting on Wednesday between Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley, the High Commissioners of Britain, Australia and Canada, and the United States Chargé d’Affaires.

The Office of the Prime Minister says the successful management of the recent national security challenges was the centerpiece of a meeting held at the Office of the Prime Minister.

A statement from the Prime Minister’s office said Rowley and the Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister Stuart Young engaged in high-level security talks with British High Commissioner Tim Stew, Australian High Commissioner, John Pilbeam, Canadian High Commissioner, Carla Hogan Rufelds and United States Chargé d’Affaires, John McIntyre.

The Office of the Prime Minister said during discussions, the international partners pledged to continue working with local law enforcement to provide the level of security needed for the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago as well as all other persons residing here.

The statement did not give any further details of the meeting.

Last week, the police announced that they had uncovered a threat to disrupt Carnival, just days leading up to the Parade of the Bands.

More than a dozen persons were arrested, most of whom have been freed without charge.
