Jamaican singer-songwriter Diana King's biggest hit, "Shy Guy," has been certified platinum in the United Kingdom after surpassing 600,000 units in combined sales and streaming equivalents.
The certification was issued Friday by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), marking another milestone for the 1995 reggae-pop classic.
"Shy Guy" peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States and reached No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart, where it spent seven weeks in the Top 10. The song also topped charts in Finland, Sweden and Zimbabwe, while reaching the Top 5 in Australia, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Norway.
Co-written and produced by Andy Marvel, "Shy Guy" was released in 1995 and reportedly took just 10 minutes to write. The track became a global success, selling nearly five million copies worldwide and earning a gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in the United States. It also topped the Eurochart Hot 100 Singles chart and was ranked the No. 1 song of 1995 by Japanese radio station J-Wave.
The song appeared on the soundtrack to the hit film "Bad Boys" and served as the lead single from King's debut album, "Tougher Than Love," which was released on April 25, 1995. The album reached No. 1 on Billboard's Reggae Albums chart.
Prior to its latest UK certification, "Shy Guy" had already been certified gold in the United States, New Zealand, Germany, France, Belgium and Australia.
These days, King resides in Florida and holds dual Jamaican and U.S. citizenship.
