City’s top scorer Bunny Shaw sidelined as injury woes mount for Gareth Taylor

MANCHESTER, England — Manchester City and Jamaica’s talismanic forward Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw has been ruled out of action until the new year due to a lower leg injury, dealing a significant blow to both club and country as she recovers.

Gareth Taylor, head coach of Manchester City, revealed the setback during an interview with MSN, stating the injury requires “a bit more extensive investigation.” He added that Shaw, the Women’s Super League’s (WSL) leading scorer with nine goals this season, will undergo scans to determine the severity of the problem.

The 27-year-old striker was conspicuously absent from City’s shocking 2-1 defeat to ninth-placed Everton on Sunday. Manchester City, clear favorites heading into the clash, found themselves in disarray as Everton surged to a commanding 2-0 lead by halftime, courtesy of strikes from Lucy Hope and Honoka Hayashi. A late consolation goal from Mary Fowler in the 89th minute could not rescue City from a disappointing loss.

City feels the void left by Shaw

Shaw’s absence has undoubtedly disrupted the rhythm of Manchester City’s attack. Just days earlier, the prolific Jamaican star delivered a dazzling performance in City’s 4-0 rout over Leicester City on December 8, where she bagged a brace with goals in the second and 29th minutes, showcasing her clinical finishing.

City’s defeat to Everton leaves them second in the WSL standings with 22 points, trailing league leaders Chelsea by six points. Arsenal, meanwhile, sit hot on their heels in third with 21 points.

‘We have to adapt’: Taylor speaks on injury crisis

Coach Taylor acknowledged the challenging circumstances posed by injuries, saying, “We’re going through a difficult time right now, but it’s about adapting and finding solutions.” His comments reflect a sense of urgency as Manchester City prepare for their next challenge — a high-stakes UEFA Women’s Champions League clash against Spanish giants Barcelona on Wednesday.

Despite the injuries plaguing the squad, Manchester City remain atop Group D with 15 points, three clear of Barcelona, as they aim to secure their place in the knockout rounds.

For Shaw, her absence will be felt keenly, not only by Manchester City but also by fans of Jamaica’s Reggae Girlz. Known for her physical prowess, unmatched goal-scoring ability, and inspirational leadership, the Jamaican captain will focus on her recovery as her team continues their hunt for domestic and European glory.

The coming weeks will determine just how quickly Shaw can return to terrorizing defenses, but for now, Manchester City must soldier on without their most potent attacking weapon.
