Jamaican football sensation Khadija “Bunny” Shaw has added another feather to her illustrious cap, earning a coveted nomination for the prestigious FIFA Women’s Player of the Year award at the 2024 FIFA Best Awards.
Shaw’s name stands tall among 16 of the world’s finest footballers, recognizing her incredible achievements between August 21, 2023, and August 10, 2024.
Dominance on the pitch
Shaw, the dazzling forward for Manchester City, has been nothing short of spectacular during the evaluation period. Her historic feats include scoring three remarkable hat tricks for her club and securing the Golden Boot in the Women’s Super League (WSL), an accolade only one other non-European player has achieved. Shaw’s 21 league goals, the joint third highest ever in a single WSL season, firmly cemented her status as one of the sport’s elite.
Her talent didn’t just shine on the field but also in award ceremonies, as she swept multiple honors, including the PFA Women’s Player of the Year, the WSL Player of the Season, and the Football Writers’ Association Women’s Footballer of the Year for the 2023–2024 season.
Among the world’s best
Shaw joins an impressive roster of nominees, including her Manchester City teammate Lauren Hemp and reigning winner, Spain and Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmatí, who dazzled during the previous year.
Voting for the awards, now in their ninth year, is already underway on FIFA’s official website and will remain open until December 10. The much-anticipated winner will be crowned during a glittering awards ceremony in January 2025.
Pride for Jamaica and the Caribbean
Shaw’s nomination not only underscores her individual brilliance but also marks a monumental moment for Jamaican and Caribbean football. Her trailblazing journey has inspired countless young players, proving that excellence knows no boundaries.
As fans and players alike await the awards, Shaw’s incredible year has already solidified her legacy as one of football’s greatest ambassadors.
