City of Fort Lauderdale loses $1.2 million in phishing scam

The City of Fort Lauderdale is reeling after falling victim to a cunning phishing scam that resulted in the loss of a staggering $1.2 million.

Infiltrating Fort Lauderdale’s finances

According to reports, on September 14th, 2023, the scammer presented as Moss Construction, a company that the city works with. 

Authorities reported that the city proceeded to make a payment of $1.2 million, under the impression that it was a legitimate transaction.

It became glaringly apparent that the city had fallen prey to an intricate web of deceit. 

Recovery efforts underway

The city is hoping to recover its money since wire transfers usually take days to finalize.

​​Police are reminding people to be vigilant and cautious when fulfilling payment requests.
