Bodies of 20  Haitians found on boat in Brazil

The bodies of approximately 20 Haitians, suspected to have succumbed to starvation and dehydration, were found aboard a vessel in northern Brazil.

The shocking discovery was made by local fishermen near the town of Braganca, situated on Brazil’s northern coast in the state of Para.

Advanced decomposition raises concerns

Upon the fishermen’s alert, authorities rushed to the scene only to confront a distressing sight – the bodies were in an advanced stage of decomposition, indicating the prolonged ordeal they had endured.

Civil police and forensics experts, upon preliminary examination, confirmed the presence of 20 bodies aboard the vessel.

Tragic fate of Haitian refugees

Authorities, led by federal police chief Alexandre Calvinho, have identified the deceased as Haitian refugees, highlighting the perilous journey undertaken by many fleeing their homeland.

Initial assessments suggest that hunger and dehydration may have been the cause of their untimely deaths, although further investigation is imperative to ascertain the exact circumstances.

Investigations launched: Seeking answers and justice

In response to this harrowing incident, the federal prosecutors’ office has initiated both criminal and civil investigations, signaling the gravity of the situation.

Determining the cause of death and establishing the identities of the victims are among the primary objectives of these inquiries, underscoring the urgency to shed light on this tragedy.

Escalating crisis in Haiti spurs exodus

The discovery of the bodies underscores the deepening humanitarian and security crisis engulfing Haiti, propelling a surge in emigration from the embattled nation.

As noted by the United Nations migration agency, the dire conditions prevailing in Haiti continue to compel its citizens to seek refuge elsewhere, amplifying the urgency for international intervention and support.
