A Beaches Negril manager encouraged young women at the Women’s Centre of Jamaica Foundation to view their current circumstances as a starting point rather than a limitation, drawing on his own experience of overcoming challenges and building a career in hospitality.

Orville Whyte, entertainment division manager at Beaches Negril, shared his story during an orientation session at the foundation’s Savanna-la-Mar location, where he spoke about some of the behavioral challenges he experienced while growing up and the opportunity that helped change the course of his life.

Whyte joined the Sandals Resorts organization shortly after leaving high school. He said the opportunity allowed him to develop his skills and advance within the company, while support from the organization later enabled him to pursue further education.

He eventually rose to a leadership position in entertainment at Beaches Negril, one of the Sandals Resorts International properties on Jamaica’s west coast.

“Never give up on yourself. Life can change in an instant, and the circumstances you face today do not have to determine where you end up tomorrow,” Whyte told the young women.

His story formed part of the resort’s engagement with participants at the Women’s Centre, which provides support and opportunities for young women as they pursue education, skills development and greater independence.

The session also included an interactive “Dress the Mannequin” activity, with Whyte joining participants in an exercise designed to encourage teamwork, imagination and self-expression.

The activity provided an informal way for participants to interact while highlighting creativity and personal development.

For Whyte, the visit was also an opportunity to demonstrate that learning and growth can happen outside of traditional classroom settings.

Beaches Negril is an all-inclusive resort in Negril that forms part of the Sandals Resorts International portfolio. The resort caters to families and couples and offers accommodations, dining, entertainment and recreational activities as part of its all-inclusive experience.

The engagement at the Women’s Centre reflects the resort’s broader involvement in its surrounding community, while giving participants an opportunity to hear directly from a hospitality professional whose own career began shortly after high school.
