Algeria breathed new life into its 2026 FIFA World Cup journey after overturning a halftime deficit to defeat Jordan 2-1 in a dramatic Group J encounter at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium.

The North Africans entered the match needing a response after suffering a 3-0 opening defeat against Argentina, and they delivered when it mattered most. Second-half goals from Nadhir Benbouali and Amine Gouiri erased Nizar Al-Rashdan’s first-half strike and lifted Algeria onto three points in the group standings.

Jordan, meanwhile, continued to search for its first World Cup point after falling to a second consecutive defeat.

Jordan strikes first despite Algeria’s early control

Algeria began the match with confidence, controlling possession and looking to exploit space through the creativity of Riyad Mahrez and Rayan Aït-Nouri.

However, Jordan remained disciplined, absorbing pressure and waiting for opportunities to counterattack.

The approach nearly paid off when Mousa Al-Tamari forced Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane into action with a long-range effort. Moments later, Al-Tamari played a decisive role in creating the opening goal.

The Jordanian attacker drove into the penalty area from the right before cutting the ball back toward Mahmoud Al-Mardi. Although the forward could not make contact, the loose ball fell perfectly to Al-Rashdan, who fired a first-time shot into the bottom corner to put Jordan ahead in the 36th minute.

Algeria attempted an immediate response before the break. Mahrez escaped behind Jordan’s defensive line, but goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila reacted quickly to narrow the angle and push the effort away.

Tactical changes spark Algeria’s comeback

Recognizing the need for urgency, Algeria head coach Vladimir Petkovic made two halftime substitutions, introducing Nabil Bentaleb and Benbouali to inject fresh energy into the attack.

The adjustments changed the rhythm of the match.

Algeria began applying sustained pressure, with Ibrahim Maza forcing Abulaila into a save from distance while Mahrez continued to threaten from the right flank.

The equalizer finally arrived in the 69th minute.

A Mahrez corner found Benbouali inside the penalty area, and the substitute rose above the defense to send a powerful header into the far corner, restoring belief to the Algerian side.

Gouiri delivers late winner as Algeria turns momentum into victory

The equalizer shifted the balance completely toward Algeria, which pushed forward in search of the decisive goal.

Jordan fought to preserve a valuable point, but Algeria’s persistence was rewarded again from a set piece.

In the 82nd minute, substitute Anis Hadj Moussa delivered another dangerous corner into the box. After a flick and deflection redirected the ball into a dangerous area, Gouiri reacted quickest inside the six-yard box, stabbing the finish past Abulaila to complete the comeback.

The late goal transformed Algeria’s night from a potential disappointment into a crucial victory.

Jordan launched one final push during seven minutes of stoppage time, but Algeria’s defense held firm and denied any clear opportunity.

Algeria returns to the race in Group J

The victory moved Algeria back into contention for qualification ahead of the final round of group matches.

After facing early adversity, the team’s response demonstrated resilience and renewed belief, turning a difficult night into a statement of survival.

Jordan, however, now faces a much steeper challenge after two defeats left its World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.
