Andrew calls for greater resolve after Windies U19s crushed by Afghanistan

West Indies U19s

WINDHOEK, Namibia — The West Indies Under-19s showed early intent but were ultimately outmatched as Afghanistan stormed to a commanding 138-run victory in their ICC Men’s U19 World Cup Group D encounter under the Windhoek sun on Wednesday.

What began as a disciplined bowling effort unraveled as the innings progressed, allowing Afghanistan to recover and post an imposing 262 for six, a total that proved well beyond the Caribbean side’s reach.

Bowlers strike early, momentum slips away

West Indies initially applied pressure through spinner Vitel Lawes and left-arm seamer Jakeem Pollard, who combined to claim six wickets and briefly stem Afghanistan’s momentum.

However, a resolute middle-order partnership swung the contest decisively. The Windies struggled to adjust their plans quickly enough, and Afghanistan capitalized, accelerating through the latter stages of the innings to build a commanding platform.

Reflecting on that turning point, wicketkeeper-batter Jewel Andrew identified a costly delay in adapting to conditions.

“I think the powerplay was good for us, and we tend to pull it back in the last few overs, but we took too long to adjust to the surface and that kind of let the score get away a bit,” Andrew said.

Conditions familiar, execution not

Andrew acknowledged that the pitch presented challenges, but not unfamiliar ones.

“The wicket was slow, low as well, and that is something that we normally play with in the Caribbean,” he explained. “I think we took too long to adjust to something that we know, and that kind of hampered us.”

He also suggested that greater tactical flexibility in the field could have altered the flow of the innings.

“I think we planned to bowl a certain way, but we could have strayed from the plan a bit earlier. We saw today that spin worked out for us, so that’s something we could try to implement coming into the next game.”

Andrew’s lone resistance in failed chase

Chasing 263, the West Indies batting line-up never found sustained momentum. Wickets fell steadily, and partnerships failed to materialize against Afghanistan’s disciplined attack.

Andrew stood as the lone figure of resistance, top-scoring with a determined 57 that briefly steadied the innings but ultimately could not prevent collapse. His knock, though resolute, underscored the broader struggle of a young line-up searching for fluency and confidence.

Spirit intact despite heavy defeat

Despite the severity of the loss, Andrew was adamant that the team’s belief and energy remain intact as the tournament continues.

“Definitely. We look to each other for answers,” he said. “The coaches set guides for us to capitalise on, and it’s just for us to go back and reflect and come for the next one.”

He reaffirmed that preparation had not been the issue and stressed the importance of confidence moving forward.

“Our preparations coming into this game were good, so it’s just about remaining confident going into the next one, and hopefully we can get over the line.”

For the young Windies, the defeat served as a sobering reminder of the demands of World Cup cricket, and a challenge to summon greater fight as their campaign presses on.

Afghanistan overpower Windies, march confidently into Super Six

Afghanistan overpower Windies

WINDHOEK, Namibia — Afghanistan confirmed their growing stature in youth cricket with a commanding all-round performance that overwhelmed the West Indies by 138 runs, sealing progression to the Super Six stage of the ICC Under-19 World Cup in emphatic fashion on Sunday.

Facing a confident Afghan side buoyed by an opening-round victory over South Africa, the Caribbean team encountered their sternest test of the group stage, and found themselves comprehensively outplayed.

Solid opening platform sets the tone

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Afghanistan laid a firm foundation through openers Khalid Ahmadzai and Osman Sadat. The pair weathered early movement from Jakeem Pollard and Shaquan Belle, compiling an assured 86-run stand that steadily shifted momentum.

The West Indies briefly clawed their way back when left-arm spinner Vitel Lawes broke the partnership and ignited a short-lived collapse. His intervention reduced Afghanistan to 110 for three in the 26th over and momentarily raised hopes of containment.

Lawes strikes, but Afghan resolve prevails

Lawes, bowling with guile and control, first had Ahmadzai caught by Francis for 34 before spinning one sharply back to bowl Faisal Shinodza for four. He then induced an aerial drive from Uzaiullah Niazai, who was caught brilliantly by a diving Jonathan van Lange for 12.

Yet Afghanistan responded with composure and authority. Captain Mehboob Khan and Sadat extinguished any West Indies resurgence with a decisive 77-run partnership, blending patience with controlled aggression.

Both batters went on to register half-centuries, although Khan survived an early chance when he was put down by wicketkeeper Jewel Andrew. Sadat anchored the innings with a fluent 88, while Khan added stability and intent with 86, guiding Afghanistan to a formidable 262 for six from their 50 overs.

Lawes and Pollard finished as the most successful West Indies bowlers, sharing six wickets between them.

Afghan bowlers strike early, never relent

Afghanistan’s response with the ball was swift and ruthless. Their varied pace-and-spin attack tore through the West Indies top order, leaving the chase in tatters with three wickets down inside the first five overs.

Tanez Francis showed early promise with a crisp drive through extra cover but was dismissed for nine when he swept off-spinner Wahidullah Zadran and was caught in the deep. Zadran struck again soon after, bowling Zacary Carter for three as the opener attempted an ambitious swipe across the line.

The off-spinner then delivered a decisive blow, producing a delivery of exceptional quality to uproot the off stump of captain Joshua Dorne for a duck.

Andrew resists, but collapse continues

Amid the collapse, wicketkeeper-batter Jewel Andrew stood firm, producing a determined half-century in a lone act of resistance. Batting with discipline and intent, Andrew struck four fours and three sixes in a 70-ball 57 that briefly stemmed the slide.

However, support proved elusive as Afghanistan’s bowlers maintained relentless pressure. Nooristani Omarzai led a clinical effort, claiming four wickets, while Zadran and Khatir Stanikzai contributed three apiece.

The West Indies innings folded for 124 in the 32nd over, sealing a comprehensive Afghan triumph.

Paths diverge as tournament intensifies

With the emphatic victory, Afghanistan advanced confidently into the Super Six and will next face Tanzania on Wednesday. The West Indies, meanwhile, face an urgent need to regroup as they prepare for a critical encounter against South Africa on Thursday.

For Afghanistan, the result underscored balance, discipline, and growing belief. For the West Indies, it served as a sobering reminder of the standards required at the sharp end of the tournament.

Shemaine Campbelle composure lifts Guyana past Jamaica in T20 Blaze

Batting worries persist in defeat ahead of World Cup opener
Shemaine Campbelle

KINGSTOWN — Guyana Women asserted authority with both ball and bat as a composed, unbeaten half-century from Shemaine Campbelle sealed a four-wicket victory over Jamaica Women in the ninth match of the T20 Blaze at the Arnos Vale Playing Field on Saturday.

After suffocating Jamaica to 87 for nine, Guyana overcame a brief mid-innings wobble to reach the target with 27 balls to spare, underlining their control of the contest from the opening exchanges.

Jamaica stalled by relentless spin

Asked to bat first, Jamaica never found momentum against a disciplined Guyanese attack that applied constant pressure and offered little release.

The innings faltered almost immediately when veteran Chedean Nation was trapped lbw for a second-over duck, setting the tone for a difficult afternoon. Partnerships failed to develop as the Shane Brooks-coached side struggled to counter the spin-heavy assault.

Stafanie Taylor once again attempted to stabilize the innings, top-scoring with a patient 24, while captain Rashada Williams added 23. Beyond those contributions, however, Jamaica’s batting lacked fluency, with no other player able to loosen the tightening grip.

Off-spin proved decisive. Ashmini Munisar led the charge with an incisive 3 for 11, ably supported by Plaffiana Millington (2 for 11) and Sheneta Grimmond (2 for 16), as Jamaica limped to 87 for nine.

Early wickets inject brief hope

Guyana’s reply began unevenly, as both openers, Realeanna and Sheneta Grimmond, were removed early to leave the score at 34 for two.

Jamaica sensed an opening when Kate Wilmott struck twice for 17 runs and Chedean Nation added two wickets of her own, reducing Guyana to 55 for five and then 60 for six. For a moment, the modest target appeared less secure than anticipated.

Campbelle’s poise breaks resistance

Any lingering Jamaican hopes were extinguished by the calm authority of Shemaine Campbelle. The experienced wicketkeeper-batter absorbed the pressure with assured shot selection, rotating the strike intelligently and punishing loose deliveries with precision.

Campbelle anchored the chase with an unbeaten 50 from 42 balls, striking eight boundaries in an innings defined by composure rather than haste. She found a reliable ally in Latoya Williams, whose unbeaten nine supported an unbroken 28-run, seventh-wicket partnership.

Together, they guided Guyana to 88 for six in just 15.3 overs, completing a victory built on discipline, experience, and control.

For Guyana, the win highlighted a balanced formula, penetrating spin bowling complemented by calm leadership in the chase. For Jamaica, it was another reminder of the need for greater batting cohesion in a competition where margins remain unforgiving.

Barbados survive batting scare to stay perfect in T20 Blaze

West Indies

KINGSTOWN — Barbados Women extended their unbeaten run in the T20 Blaze on Saturday, but not without a considerable dose of fortune, edging Windward Islands Women by three wickets after an error-strewn batting display at the Arnos Vale Playing Field.

Powered by a dominant bowling effort and aided by costly Windward indiscipline, Barbados stumbled their way to 87 for seven in 16.1 overs, sealing a third straight victory and keeping pace with fellow unbeaten side Leeward Islands Women.

For the Windwards, however, the defeat marked a third consecutive loss, leaving them rooted at the bottom of the standings with only two matches remaining.

Connell leads bowling rout

After opting to bat first, the Windward Islands never found stability against a disciplined Barbadian attack led by Shamilia Connell, whose incisive spell dismantled the middle and lower order.

Early damage proved decisive. Earnisha Fontaine was run out for two, Nerissa Crafton fell for six, and Jannillea Glasgow departed for eight, leaving the Windwards reeling at 32 for three after eight overs.

Afy Fletcher and Carena Noel attempted to rebuild with a 37-run, fourth-wicket stand, but the recovery lacked urgency, unfolding at a sluggish five runs per over.

Once that partnership was broken, the innings unraveled rapidly. Connell and Shanika Bruce claimed the final five wickets for just 17 runs, as the Windwards collapsed from 69 for three to 81 for eight.

Fletcher was caught behind off Bruce for 35 from 32 balls, while Noel was bowled by Connell for 16. Connell finished with outstanding figures of 4 for 8 from four overs, supported by Bruce’s 2 for 18, as the Windwards were restricted to 86 for eight.

Barbados stumble in chase

What should have been a routine chase quickly turned uncomfortable for Barbados. Openers Trishan Holder and Eboni Brathwaite fell early, leaving the score at 19 for two.

A brief stabilizing effort came from Naijanni Cumberbatch and Asabi Callender, who added 30 runs for the third wicket. But the innings continued to stutter once Cumberbatch, the top scorer with 15, was dismissed by Aldith Gasper.

Abini St Jean then struck twice in quick succession, removing Callender for 15 and captain Aaliyah Alleyne, reducing Barbados to 56 for five and injecting fresh belief into the Windward camp.

Extras prove costly as Barbados hang on

The Windwards undermined their own efforts with persistent indiscipline, conceding a staggering 21 wides, gifting Barbados invaluable runs in a low-scoring contest.

Even so, the visitors remained in danger when Shakera Selman fell for nine and Connell for one, leaving Barbados wobbling at 75 for seven and still 12 runs shy of victory.

Allison Gordon, however, held her nerve. With composure and restraint, she guided Barbados home with an unbeaten 12, sealing a narrow escape rather than a commanding statement.

Discipline the difference

Fletcher led the Windward bowling with 2 for 14, while Gasper and St Jean each claimed 2 for 17, but the excess wides ultimately tilted the balance.

For Barbados, the victory preserved their perfect record, though the batting frailties exposed may prompt reflection. For the Windwards, another spirited effort ended in frustration, as lapses in execution again proved costly in a tight contest.

Leewards tighten grip on final spot with third-straight T20 Blaze win

Rain dampens West Indies’ final T20I push as England claims confirms win

KINGSTOWN — Leeward Islands Women strengthened their hold on a place in the T20 Blaze final with a composed four-wicket victory over Trinidad and Tobago Women on Saturday, extending their unbeaten run to three matches and consolidating their position at the top of the standings.

With two preliminary games still to play, the Leewards now sit firmly in control of their destiny and, barring a late stumble, appear destined for next Friday’s championship match.

Bowlers set the platform

The foundation for victory was laid by a disciplined bowling display that stifled Trinidad and Tobago and prevented any meaningful momentum from developing. At the Arnos Vale Playing Field, the Leewards restricted their opponents to a meager 74 for nine from 20 overs, with only three batters reaching double figures.

Davronique Maynard and Amanda Edwards led the charge, claiming two wickets apiece as Trinidad and Tobago’s line-up faltered repeatedly under sustained pressure. Amelia Khan top-scored with 17, while Britney Cooper and Nadia Mohammed each contributed 12, but the innings never recovered after a steady collapse.

By the 15th over, Trinidad and Tobago had slid to 47 for seven and were left scrambling merely to reach a respectable total.

Steady start, late stutter

Chasing a modest target, the Leewards briefly stumbled with the early losses of Qiana Joseph and Shawnisha Hector. However, Reniece Boyce and Edwards quickly restored order with a fluent 55-run partnership that carried the score to 57 for two in the 12th over.

Boyce anchored the innings with a top score of 28, while Edwards added 27, placing the result firmly beyond doubt at that stage.

Ramharack sparks brief drama

Trinidad and Tobago’s off-spinner Karishma Ramharack injected fleeting tension into the chase, removing Edwards, Boyce, and Kimberly Anthony in quick succession. Anisa Mohammed compounded the pressure by bowling Maynard for a duck, reducing the Leewards to 73 for six.

Despite the late wobble, the outcome was never in serious jeopardy. Jahzara Claxton calmly guided her side to victory with an unbeaten 12, completing the chase at 75 for six in 16.1 overs.

Ramharack finished with impressive figures of three for 13, but her efforts came too late to alter the course of the match.

Momentum with purpose

For the Leeward Islands Women, the victory underscored a balanced formula built on disciplined bowling and controlled batting. For Trinidad and Tobago, it was another frustrating outing marked by missed opportunities and a lack of sustained resistance.

As the tournament moves into its decisive phase, the Leewards continue to set the pace, efficient, composed, and increasingly within sight of the final.

Broward Schools defend financial management amid state criticism

Dr. Howard Hepburn, Superintendent of Broward County Schools
Dr. Howard Hepburn, Superintendent of Broward County Schools

Broward County school officials are pushing back against criticism from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who suggested the state consider taking control of the district due to what he called years of budget mismanagement and favoritism toward entrenched interests.

The comments come as the district continues to navigate a series of financial scandals, including abruptly withdrawing from a nearly $3 million office-space lease that led to a lawsuit, misallocating teacher referendum funds, and a “botched multimillion-dollar procurement process” designed to select a contractor for overseeing construction projects.

In a letter to state Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia, Superintendent Howard Hepburn outlined recent measures taken to improve the district’s financial situation, including leaving non-critical positions vacant and reviewing internal processes. “Over the past year, our school board and I have taken decisive and responsible actions to strengthen financial controls, improve accountability and generate meaningful cost savings,” Hepburn wrote. He added that the district is working to identify and correct past structural inefficiencies that contributed to long-term financial challenges.

School board member Adam Cervera, who was appointed to the board by DeSantis, last week called for a full-scale review of the district’s finances by the state, including the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). “This crisis is not the result of bad luck. This is the result of years of mismanagement, wasteful spending, and a complete lack of proper oversight, and it has only gotten worse in just the past few months,” Cervera said. “We’ve seen scandal after scandal. We need transparency, accountability, and the confidence that this mismanagement will not be ignored or swept under the rug.”

DeSantis previously criticized the district for being run to benefit “the entrenched interests, particularly the school unions, rather than the parents and the students,” suggesting that state intervention may be necessary to correct the mismanagement.

Hepburn welcomed the state’s involvement, describing the government as a “valued partner” in efforts to streamline operations, identify efficiencies, and ensure long-term financial stability for students, families, and taxpayers.

Florida sees rare snow for second year in a row

Florida trip

Parts of the western Florida Panhandle experienced a brief dusting of snow on Sunday morning, marking the second consecutive year the Sunshine State has seen winter flakes. Frigid air rushing in behind a cold front turned the last rain showers into snow, leaving a light coating on grass and rooftops.

The snowfall was fleeting and too light to stick to roads, but it was enough to prompt photos of snow-covered palm fronds and frosty lawns to flood social media. Less than a year ago, on January 21, 2025, the same areas saw up to eight inches of snow—the heaviest in many places since the late 1800s.

Snow wasn’t limited to Florida. Parts of southeastern Alabama and southern Georgia also reported snow, with cities such as Columbus and Macon, Georgia, experiencing enough accumulation to prompt travel warnings. Residents across the region enjoyed a brief glimpse of a second winter wonderland in under a year.

Jamaica providing cash grants to over 50,000 affected by Hurricane Melissa

Jamaica is shifting its Hurricane Melissa relief efforts from traditional food distributions to a cash-based assistance model, giving affected families more control over how they meet their immediate needs. The move is aimed at restoring dignity and flexibility for households as they recover from the devastation of last October’s Category 5 storm.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness previously said that the move is to ensure the dignity of Jamaicans is protected even during hurricane recovery.

Speaking at a post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House on Wednesday, Minister of Labour and Social Security Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr. said the Government continues to work closely with international partners, including the World Food Programme (WFP) and UNICEF, to deliver support. “Recovery is not only about receiving food but also about giving the families the dignity and the flexibility to meet their immediate needs as they work to restore normal life,” he said.

The WFP, which completed its in-kind food distribution by delivering roughly 98,000 food kits, is now providing cash support to approximately 16,000 households—about 50,000 individuals—through two cycles of $34,000 grants. Beneficiaries are selected using the Ministry’s assessment list, targeting senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and families most in need, with payments delivered through national remittance networks.

World Central Kitchen also played a major role in immediate relief, providing nearly six million meals to around 130,000 people in the hardest-hit parishes.

UNICEF is supporting the Government in strengthening shock-responsive social protection systems, with a focus on children and vulnerable households.

“The initiative aims to reach 40,000 children, including children who are on PATH (Programme of Advancement Through Health and Education) or in PATH households, with specific focus on those households that have pregnant and lactating women, children under six, and children with disabilities, along with expanding the coverage to an additional 1,000 children in the disaster-affected households,” Mr. Charles Jr. outlined.

UNICEF is also helping to build a faster, fairer, and more transparent disaster response system, including measures to ensure disability inclusion through the I Am Able JCPD app.

To ensure accountability, the Government has implemented monitoring and feedback systems at community and redemption sites. The shift to cash-based support signals a new phase in Jamaica’s recovery efforts, putting more decision-making power directly in the hands of survivors as they rebuild their lives.

Jamaica’s NHT disburses $324 million in hurricane relief grants

Jamaica’s National Housing Trust (NHT) has so far paid out $324 million in housing grants to 810 applicants under the Hurricane Relief Grant initiative, Managing Director Martin Miller revealed on January 14 during a sitting of the Public Administration and Appropriations Committee (PAAC) of Parliament.

Miller said the NHT has received 2,573 applications as of January 13, with 995 processed to date. He provided a breakdown of applications by parish, noting that 617 came from St. James, 225 from Manchester, 303 from Westmoreland, and 794 from St. Elizabeth, where 360 applications have been processed and 251 payments made.

He acknowledged that the agency faced challenges, particularly in rural areas such as Westmoreland, in reaching affected residents and verifying ownership of damaged properties. “If you are from rural Jamaica, you’ll recognise that houses pass down from one generation to another generation, so you may not be in possession of a title,” Miller explained. The NHT has adopted alternative verification methods, including endorsements from Justices of the Peace or recognised community leaders, to confirm applicants’ claims.

Miller emphasized the importance of ensuring applications are genuine, citing instances where individuals claimed grants for properties they did not occupy. He noted that once all documentation is received, NHT teams aim to conduct site visits and verifications within three days, completing validation and submitting for payment in less than a week.

The initiative reflects the NHT’s ongoing efforts to support Jamaicans affected by hurricanes while maintaining rigorous verification processes to ensure proper distribution of funds.

Pregnant woman falls to her death at Georgetown Public Hospital

Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation

Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) has launched an investigation into the death of a 22-year-old pregnant woman who died after reportedly falling from a window of the female medical ward on Sunday evening.

The woman has been identified as Marissa Eastman of La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, Region Three. Authorities said Eastman, who was approximately six months pregnant, had been admitted to the hospital earlier that day after relatives became concerned about what they described as increasingly abnormal behaviour.

In a statement, the hospital said a psychiatric evaluation was conducted upon her admission. According to GPHC, the assessment did not reveal any psychotic symptoms or suicidal thoughts at the time.

The hospital said it has initiated a full internal investigation into the incident and will review existing protocols related to patient observation and mental health monitoring, including suicide watch policies, to determine whether any safeguards need to be strengthened.

“Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation has also offered psychosocial and psychiatric support to both the relatives of the deceased and staff members affected by the incident,” the statement said.

However, relatives have raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding Eastman’s death. Speaking to local media, family members questioned how a patient who was reportedly showing signs of psychological distress was able to leave her bed without supervision, gain access to a window, and fall from the third floor without intervention.

The Guyana Police Force has since launched its own investigation into the matter as inquiries continue into the events leading up to the woman’s death.

St Lucia Police launch 7-day gun amnesty ahead of tougher enforcement

St Lucia Police

The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) will roll out a seven-day gun amnesty programme this week, offering what officials have described as a final opportunity for individuals to surrender illegal firearms and ammunition before law enforcement intensifies its crackdown on gun-related offences.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Luke Defreitas said the amnesty will run from January 19 to January 23, before resuming from January 26 to January 28. During the designated periods, firearms and ammunition may be surrendered between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. at police stations across the island.

Defreitas said the initiative forms part of a broader push toward a “zero tolerance” approach to illegal guns, as authorities seek to curb gun violence and improve public safety. He urged anyone in possession of illegal firearms or ammunition to take advantage of the amnesty window.

Individuals wishing to surrender weapons are required to contact their nearest police station in advance to notify officers of their intention. Defreitas outlined strict safety protocols, noting that all firearms must be unloaded, with no ammunition in the chamber or magazines, and securely placed in a carrier. Persons are also advised to travel directly to the police station without making any stops.

However, police have cautioned that the amnesty does not grant immunity from the law. Defreitas stressed that it is not a “get out of jail free” period, warning that anyone found in possession of illegal firearms or ammunition during police operations will still be arrested and prosecuted.

He also noted that all surrendered weapons will undergo forensic examination, including ballistic testing. “Any firearm surrendered will be subject to ballistic testing and should it be found that it is aligned in any way to the commission of any past offence, persons will be made to answer,” Defreitas said.

The Assistant Commissioner further emphasized that the programme is not a “cash for gun” initiative. “We will not be paying for the surrender of firearms,” he said, reiterating that the sole focus of the amnesty is public safety rather than financial incentive.

Police say enforcement operations will be intensified following the conclusion of the amnesty period, as authorities move to remove illegal firearms from communities across Saint Lucia.

Two Jamaican gov’t employees arrested after J$5.4M cocaine seizure at Sangster Airport

Detectives assigned to the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division (FNID) have arrested two senior government employees following the seizure of more than $5 million worth of cocaine at the Sangster International Airport in St James.

The suspects, a man and a woman, were intercepted around midday on Friday by port security and FNID personnel at a security checkpoint while attempting to board a flight bound for New York. Their identities are being withheld pending further investigations.

According to police, a search of their luggage revealed several false compartments containing rectangular packages of cocaine weighing approximately 9.25 kilograms. The illicit drugs have an estimated street value of $5.4 million. Officers also recovered a quantity of cash in United States currency from a handbag during the search.

Following the airport arrests, FNID personnel carried out follow-up operations at the residences of both suspects. During those searches, investigators reportedly seized a Glock 19 pistol, 13 rounds of ammunition and approximately one ounce of cocaine.

Police also disclosed that one of the suspects informed investigators that he had ingested more than 70 pellets of cocaine. He was subsequently admitted to a medical facility, where he remains under police guard.

Director of FNID, Superintendent Patrae Rowe, said the operation reflects intensified efforts by the Jamaica Constabulary Force to disrupt the illegal firearms and narcotics trade.

“This operation underscores the intensified investigations by the Jamaica Constabulary Force to maintain the integrity of our borders and hold all individuals accountable, regardless of their professional standing or social status,” Rowe said. “We are continuing our mission to further dismantle the networks that facilitate the trafficking of illicit drugs and firearms.”

Investigations into the seizure and the wider trafficking network are ongoing.

IMF approves US$415 million disbursement to Jamaica after Hurricane Melissa

Hurricane Melissa Jamaica
© IOM/Nicholas Renford Homes in Westmoreland, Jamaica, were devastated by Hurricane Melissa.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved emergency financial assistance of approximately US$415 million to Jamaica to help the country address urgent economic pressures caused by Hurricane Melissa.

In a statement issued on January 16, 2026, the IMF said its Executive Board approved the disbursement under the Rapid Financing Instrument’s (RFI) large natural disaster window. The funding—equivalent to SDR 306.32 million, or about 80 per cent of Jamaica’s quota—is intended to help meet immediate balance-of-payments needs following widespread destruction from the hurricane.

The IMF noted that while Jamaica has a strong disaster risk financing framework and a solid track record of economic reforms, the scale of damage caused by Hurricane Melissa has placed significant strain on public finances. The hurricane led to widespread infrastructure damage, fiscal pressures, and a sharp decline in tourism receipts, creating short-term external financing gaps.

Jamaican authorities are continuing efforts to restore essential services in the hardest-hit areas while advancing reconstruction plans, with a stated focus on supporting the most vulnerable communities affected by the storm. The IMF said the government remains committed to fiscal responsibility and debt reduction once the immediate hurricane-related shock has passed, even as it temporarily eases fiscal rules to facilitate recovery.

Commenting on the decision, IMF Deputy Managing Director and Chair Bo Li said Hurricane Melissa caused “unprecedented destruction” across the island and is expected to have a significant negative impact on economic growth. He noted that despite Jamaica’s sound macroeconomic policies and multi-layered disaster preparedness, available resources were insufficient to meet recovery needs.

“Emergency assistance under the Rapid Financing Facility would help to support relief efforts, particularly for the most vulnerable, and accelerate the recovery,” Li said, adding that continued collaboration with international partners remains critical.

The IMF also highlighted inflationary pressures stemming from severe damage to agriculture, which has created a negative supply shock. It stressed the importance of the Bank of Jamaica maintaining its inflation target to anchor expectations and ensure financial stability, while limiting foreign exchange interventions to periods of disorderly market conditions.

Looking ahead, the Fund said Jamaica’s commitment to credible policy frameworks and long-standing economic reforms provides a strong foundation for medium-term stability, even as the country navigates the immediate challenges of post-hurricane recovery.

Reform Barbados enters political arena ahead of February general election

Reform Barbados

A new political party, Reform Barbados, has entered the island’s political landscape, positioning itself as an alternative to the two long-established parties as Barbados heads into a general election next month.

The party was officially launched on Friday by Steve Prescott, a British-born employment law consultant with Barbadian roots. Prescott said he has already attracted a small group of supporters and is now focused on recruiting candidates to contest all 30 seats in Parliament.

He confirmed that he intends to run in the upcoming election, even if he is the sole candidate representing the party at this stage. While he has not yet finalized the constituency he will contest, Prescott said it is likely to be in the Parish Land, Christ Church area, where his late father lived before migrating to the United Kingdom in the 1960s.

The launch of Reform Barbados comes as the island prepares for a general election scheduled for Wednesday, February 11, 2026. Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley announced the election date over the weekend, formally setting the stage for a national poll months ahead of the constitutional deadline, which was not due until 2027.

The announcement was made at a Barbados Labour Party (BLP) nomination meeting at Westbury Primary School, where attorney-at-law Michael Lashley, KC, was confirmed as the party’s candidate for the City constituency. With that nomination, the ruling BLP has completed its slate of candidates for all 30 seats in the House of Assembly.

To facilitate the election, Parliament will be dissolved on January 19, with Nomination Day set for January 27.

In addition to the BLP, led by Prime Minister Mottley, the main parties contesting the election include the Democratic Labour Party (DLP), led by Ralph Thorne, and the People’s Party for Democracy and Development (PdP), led by Joseph Atherley. Reform Barbados now joins the race as a new entrant seeking to broaden the political choices available to voters.

Dancehall artist Squash set for US prison release in January 2027

Squash

Dancehall entertainer Squash is scheduled to be released from federal prison in the United States in January 2027, according to records from the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

The St. James–born artist, whose real name is Andrae Maurice Whittaker, is currently housed at the Federal Detention Center (FDC) in Miami and is listed for release on January 25, 2027. The date represents roughly 80 per cent of his full sentence, a standard threshold for inmates convicted in federal court who qualify for release based on good behaviour.

Whittaker was sentenced on Monday, November 24, to two years and three months in federal prison after pleading guilty to possession of a firearm while living in the United States illegally. The case stemmed from his arrest during a traffic stop in Miami in early 2025, when law enforcement recovered a firearm from the vehicle in which he was traveling. Authorities said the weapon had been modified with a switch, commonly referred to in Jamaica as a “chip glock.”

Following his arrest, Whittaker was transferred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody and later entered a plea agreement admitting to the firearm offence as an undocumented immigrant.

U.S. prosecutors had then alleged during court proceedings that Squash was the head of a “transnational criminal organization,” claiming he entered the United States illegally in January 2021 after fleeing Jamaica amid a deadly gang feud. His legal team has consistently rejected allegations made by federal authorities that he is the leader of an organised criminal gang.

Court documents also stated that he had previously been detained by ICE and released on bond after marrying an American citizen, who authorities allege purchased one of the firearms linked to the case.

Squash, a native of Salt Spring in Montego Bay, initially pleaded not guilty to charges including illegal possession of a modified weapon and carrying a concealed firearm without a permit, before later changing his plea. The sentencing brought months of legal proceedings to an end.

Upon completion of his sentence, he is expected to face further immigration action. Whittaker remains housed at FDC Miami, an administrative-security federal detention facility located in downtown Miami, until his scheduled release in 2027.

Jesma Paul-Victor reappointed as Dominica’s leader of the Opposition

Jesma Paul-Victor

Jesma Paul-Victor has been reappointed as Leader of the Opposition in Dominica’s House of Assembly, following her official appointment on January 16, 2026. She took the prescribed oath of office on Monday, resuming the role she first held after the 2022 general election.

Paul-Victor, the parliamentary representative for the Salisbury constituency, was reappointed after Marigot MP Anthony Charles—Dominica’s only other elected opposition member—wrote to the President requesting that she be named to the position. Both Paul-Victor and Charles entered Parliament as independent candidates after winning seats in the December 20, 2022 snap general election.

With just two opposition MPs elected, neither was able to command majority support among non-government members, as required under the Constitution. To address this, the two agreed to a power-sharing arrangement shortly after the election, under which they would alternate serving as Leader of the Opposition.

Paul-Victor was first appointed to the post on December 20, 2022, for an 18-month term, which was scheduled to end on June 19, 2024. Under the agreement, Charles was expected to assume the role thereafter. Paul-Victor submitted her resignation on June 20, 2024, but the President’s office later indicated that, under Section 66 of the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Dominica, the appointment of a Leader of the Opposition requires a joint submission from opposition MPs. In the absence of a jointly signed letter from both Paul-Victor and Charles, Charles’ appointment could not proceed.

At the time, Charles told Dominica News Online that he remained ready to take up the leadership role and stressed the importance of honouring the agreed 18-month rotation. He also announced that he had joined the newly formed United Progressive Party (UPP) and spoke of plans to work with other independent candidates from the last election to strengthen opposition coordination. However, he noted then that he had not received communication from Paul-Victor regarding the required joint letter.

With the President’s confirmation of Paul-Victor’s reappointment, she now formally resumes duties as Leader of the Opposition. It remains unclear whether the earlier power-sharing arrangement between the two MPs has been formally resolved, as Charles has yet to assume the position despite the initial agreement.

Guyana bolsters border defences as tensions in Venezuela escalate

Mark Phillips
Prime Minister Mark Phillips.

Guyana has stepped up its border security after recent political unrest in neighbouring Venezuela, Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips said this week, underscoring the country’s commitment to safeguarding its territorial integrity.

Speaking on the Starting Point podcast on Sunday, the prime minister said that while the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has long maintained deployments along the borders with Venezuela, Suriname and Brazil, recent events prompted an immediate shift to an even higher state of readiness. “Immediately, we went into a more heightened state of readiness. In fact, I would argue that the troops…were already in a heightened state of readiness,” he said, referring to the situation that unfolded in Venezuela on January 3.

Phillips, a former army chief, noted that the government has intensified monitoring and coordination with regional authorities, especially along the western frontier. He travelled to Region One (Barima-Waini) where he met with members of the Defence Board, regional officials, law enforcement and residents to discuss security arrangements. “We…met with the regional administration because they have an important role in terms of intelligence,” he explained, adding that improved internet connectivity has helped local communities stay informed about developments.

While authorities have not observed any unusual activity along the Guyana–Venezuela border, Phillips stressed that current cross-border movement “is routine activity.” Still, he warned that vigilance remains critical: “We will not fall into any false sense of security… and ensure that any instability on the other side of the border does not spill over into Guyana.”

The prime minister said Guyana’s priority remains ensuring that every citizen, especially those in border regions, feels safe. In discussing wider regional responses to the situation in Venezuela, Phillips said that while CARICOM member states may voice differing positions, “each country must ultimately act in accordance with its own national interests.” He also voiced support for the balanced stance taken by President Dr. Irfaan Ali in addressing the developments.

Guyana’s strengthened posture comes amid ongoing historical tensions with Venezuela over territorial claims — particularly related to the Essequibo region — a dispute that has periodically heightened security concerns for Georgetown.

Tributes pour in following death of reggae icon Stephen ‘Cat’ Coore

Cat Coore

Tributes have been pouring in from across Jamaica and the global music community following the death of legendary musician Stephen “Cat” Coore, who passed away on Sunday, January 18, at age 69. Coore was a founding member and musical director of the iconic reggae band Third World and is widely regarded as one of the architects of Jamaica’s modern musical legacy.

Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Olivia Grange described Coore as “a unique talent who could truly be described as ‘The Reggae Ambassador’,” calling his passing “a tremendous loss.” In a statement issued Monday, Grange extended condolences to his family, saying, “I know his wife Lisa, his children Shiah, Kanna, Stephen and Ashley, and his grandchildren must be devastated.” She added, “The Government and people of Jamaica are grateful to them for allowing ‘Cat’ Coore the time to share with us his gift of musical excellence.”

Grange also highlighted Coore’s musical legacy, noting that with Third World he delivered classic hits including Reggae Ambassador, Now That We Found Love, 96 Degrees in the Shade and Try Jah Love. She reminded the public that before co-founding Third World, Coore “was an integral part of the successful reggae group, Inner Circle,” and said his legacy would continue to inspire future generations. “We will miss ‘Cat’ Coore’s presence,” she said, “but there is no doubt that his legacy will live on.”

Prime Minister Andrew Holness described Coore as “a towering figure in our cultural history and one of the architects of Jamaica’s global musical legacy.” He said Coore’s work helped shape a sound that carried Jamaica’s message “to every corner of the world,” adding that his artistry blended “technical brilliance with deep cultural consciousness.”

“Cat Coore was a cultural ambassador in the truest sense, representing Jamaica with dignity, excellence, and pride,” Holness said, noting that his contribution to the creative arts “enriched our national identity and inspired generations of musicians at home and abroad.” He added that Coore’s receipt of the Order of Distinction was fitting recognition for “a lifetime dedicated to music and nation-building through the arts.”

Opposition Leader Mark J. Golding also paid tribute, calling Coore’s death “a terrible shock.” He described the musician as “a phenomenal musician, whose contribution to Jamaican popular music over five decades is enormous.” Golding said Coore’s “technical and compositional genius” helped Third World pioneer a bold fusion of musical styles rooted in reggae, while pushing the genre’s boundaries.

“Cat’s virtuoso performances on the guitar and cello, along with his subtle vocal harmonies and occasional lead voice, played a major role in building the group’s international acclaim and commercial success,” Golding said, adding, “His guitar solos are among the best in the genre.”

Golding also shared a personal reflection, saying he last saw Coore just days before his passing. “We warmly embraced, with promises that we would soon talk. The news this morning of his passing is therefore all the more shocking,” he said.

Stephen “Cat” Coore, OD, was born April 6, 1956. He is survived by his wife Lisa, his children, grandchildren, and a global community of fans. As Holness noted, “May his music continue to live on, reminding us of who we are and the power of Jamaican creativity to unite the world.”

The difference between skinny fit and slim fit denim for girls

An all-time classic and staple in every girl’s wardrobe, jeans never go out of trend. Even when styles are constantly changing, some fits still have a way of sticking out. Both skinny fit and slim fit jeans are very popular; they have some key characteristics. By learning the differences, girls can choose a style that better fits their desires and needs.

What Defines Skinny Fit Denim?

Skinny fit jeans are designed to follow the contours of the body from hip to ankle. These jeans often have a high percentage of stretch. The elasticity of the fabric allows for free movement yet follows the contours of the bodyline. The slim fit emphasizes the legs and gives it an elegant look. This fit is, in fact, the go-to for girls who are looking for a modern chic vibe. Shoppers comparing styles often find that slim jeans for girls offer a flattering fit without the tighter feel of skinny denim.

Skinny Fit Jeans: Top Features

The leg opening of skinny-fit denim is on the narrow side. The fabric hugs the calves and ankles and naturally molds to the legs. They typically sit at the natural waist or a tad below and have an updated vibe to them. They fit tightly, making them perfect for layering underneath boots or wearing with baggy tops. They are often worn by girls because they are multi-functional casual wear and can also be worn for a little fancier occasions.

Understanding Slim Fit Denim

Slim jeans sit tighter than regular denim but are still more relaxed than skinnies. I love how these jeans sculpt to the body without being skin-tight. It is comfortably tailored but also with room to move. Slim fit is the most flattering option for girls liking a fitted look without the extreme tightness of skinny jeans.

Characteristics of Slim Fit Jeans

The leg is normally straight or ever so slightly tapered with fitted denim. The material is looser at the thighs/hips, but it is not clinging to the legs so tightly like skinny fits. These jeans are usually able to give you greater mobility. One reason these jeans are so comfortable for everyday wear is that they are especially suited for maturing girls who are active and on the move! These pants have an ability to suit a different look and can be styled with any tops and shoes.

Comparing Comfort Levels

Comfort is an important factor when comparing skinny and slim-fit jeans. Skinny fits are stretchy so they usually offer some amount of comfort, but they can feel constricting to wear for long periods. Conversely, slim-fit jeans provide a comfortable vibe perfect for long days in denim. Skinny-fit jeans might be preferred for school or on weekends by girls who need a lot of freedom of movement.

How to Style Your Skinny-Fit Denim

You can pair skinny jeans with a lot of outfits. They are fitted very well and work fine with a longer top, tunics, or chunky sweaters. Ballet flats or ankle boots go well with the narrow leg, creating a tidy silhouette. A lot of girls will wear them with sneakers as well, creating a casual look. Skinny fit jeans are versatile; wearing them, you can wear them through all the seasons and occasions.

How to Style Slim Denim

Slim-fit jeans are ideal for both formal and informal functions. They go well with blouses, t-shirts, or even blazers. And because the leg is less fitted, they go well with loafers, sneakers, or sandals. If you wish to enhance its style, consider rolling up the hem, which is particularly appropriate for the warmer months! Girls can mix and match anything: tops, accessories, etc., and experiment confidently.

Choosing the Right Fit

Narrower bottoms seem to be a preferred choice, but there are still several options to pick from when it comes to pants that fit tightly to your legs, and it all boils down to personal taste and comfort. Skinny fits are a favorite for girls who lean towards a body-hugging silhouette. If you prefer a fit that is customized yet comfortable, you might consider slim fits. You will be required to try these styles to see which is the most figure-flattering. Every fit comes with a unique benefit and is a way to express yourself through fashion.

Conclusion

Skinny fit denim and skinny jeans are cool and chic for girly types, too. In addition to comfort and style, each type of denim offers a unique look and versatility. Knowing these differences will allow girls to make informed decisions and consequently feel more satisfied with their jeans. Finding the right fit makes the fashion fun.

What Makes a Civil War Game Historically Engaging?

civil war game

Few eras have commanded the attention of history buffs and casual players as civil war games. These games provide users with interactive storytelling and strategic challenges based on historical events. When we place value on accuracy and immersion, that only adds appeal. In this post, I examine what successfully bridges a gap between the qualities that made a civil war game historically engaging in the time that it took place and the modern levels of deadly, brutal realism that a broader audience has to experience through gaming.

Attention to Authentic Detail

Attention to detail is key for historical immersion. Developers achieve a believable suspension of disbelief by incorporating accurate uniforms and weapons, along with realistic-sounding period dialogue. Players pick up on little details, like the right patches of rank or regional accent, that create an atmosphere of time travel. When the design is consistent, this illusion can live on during the overall experience. Gamers seeking the best historical Civil War PC games to play today often discover how authentic battle mechanics bring history to life.

Representation of Real Events

However, a number of popular Civil War games depict famous battles and key events. Users get to recreate big events, allowing them to understand the important historical context behind the actions and what is on the line. Many of these games feature timelines or context menus that can be opened to provide the player with extra information, for example, when someone is interested in learning more. That layer of education builds onto the fun without weighing users down with facts.

Strategic Depth and Decision-Making

The best civil war games provide users with difficult, yet non-historical, decisions to have to make and the ability to create new content with these starting points. The questions of strategic planning, allocating resources, and tactical moves echo the decisions made by leaders at the table throughout history. The abstract nature of real-life military campaigns is reflected in games that offer multiple solutions or allow for different paths; such breakthroughs and approaches are inherently uncertain. This method promotes critical analysis and inspires curiosity about how history might have unfolded differently.

Balanced Historical Accuracy and Entertainment

In terms of accuracy, it is important, but still, the balance in the middle of history and entertainment is the key. Users retain interest in games that are historically accurate with some level of creative license. Some scenarios can stretch events to create a more enjoyable game experience. Of course, the finest experiences both honor the original material and make traversing history a lively and enjoyable experience.

Immersive Storytelling and Character Development

The narrative drives the users to engage with the age closer to understanding. There are many original characters or real historical figures that oftentimes you will see in Civil War games. Savvy stories with emotional arcs lead to empathy/investment. Encouraging users to put themselves in different shoes enhances comprehension and personalizes history.

Dynamic Battlefields and Realistic Environments

One of the most potent aspects of immersing the user in the environment is that this environment serves as an entry point to the overall experience. Realistic terrain, weather conditions, and destructible structures enhance the experience. In dynamic battlefields, the outcome shifts based on player decisions, serving to reinforce the chaos of war. These factors help to ensure that every session is different and unforgettable.

Sound Design and Musical Score

The audio design is one of the main factors that adds depth to the immersion of a game. Realistic sound effects, from musket discharge to the footfalls of marching boots or cannon fire in the distance, help to establish the time period. Scoring that sounds like it stepped right out of the period heightens the tension and emotion. These elements work in synergy to immerse users in the center of the action.

Educational Value

Civil War games are like little interactive history lessons. Background content, such as biographies or in-depth maps, supplements various titles. Such elements prompt further investigation and questions about the time. It combines entertainment and education in a way where you know the game has done well if a user leaves the session with a new piece of knowledge.

Conclusion

With their historical accuracy, strategic nuance, and gripping narrative, civil war games wow players. To create experiences that are memorable and informative, these factors must work in unison. By choosing the subject matter, the design elements, and everything in between, developers give users the opportunity to explore history in a significant way. The timeless attraction of civil war games is a window to the past, a pleasant challenge, and a bit of knowledge. By playing interactively with history, kids will love the past, and stories of bygone days will live on in the experiences of the new generation.

8 Chicken Coop Design Features That Make Daily Care Easier

Chickens can be fun and provide an egg a day, but caring for them can be a never-ending job. Thoughtful coop design can reduce the daily workload pretty dramatically. With this goal in mind, chicken keepers can save time and energy daily when they focus on practical features. Below are eleven design elements that make it easier and faster to take care of poultry.

1. Easy-Access Doors

Big, properly located doors make gathering eggs, cleaning, and feeding a breeze. The arrangement permits adults to enter with ease and carry supplies. The smooth-opening hinged or sliding doors are designed to prevent injuries and frustration.

Predators can’t get in with secure latches, and caretakers can breathe easy. And if the doors open and close smoothly, the regular use becomes a great deal easier too. Farmers exploring options to buy chicken coops often discover how smart design features simplify daily care routines.

2. Removable Droppings Trays

Droppings trays that slide out make cleaning a no-brainer. This type is a tray that needs quick disposal of debris that catches waste under perches or roosts. This item helps to keep the environment clean and ensures a healthier home for your chickens. Plastics or galvanized metal, for example, are more resistant to rust and easily rinsed off. This is a time-saving feature when it comes to sanitization.

3. Exterior Nest Box Access

Egg collecting is done every day, so outside access to the nest box makes it easy. External-opening nest boxes are designed to open from the outside, allowing hens to be less disturbed unnecessarily. The flip-up or hinged lids allow easy access to eggs, thereby reducing multiple steps each morning. This design also, on top of everything, prevents you from tracking dirt or mud inside the main coop. Birds have fewer interruptions, and eggs have less contamination.

4. Adequate Ventilation

Air is vital to the well-being of your chickens and to minimizing odors. Vents and windows must be placed to ensure constant airflow and no drafts. Adjustable openings ensure that you always feel comfortable, regardless of weather changes. Pests and predators are kept out by screens or wire mesh, but air is free to circulate. Do you want to lessen the likelihood of catching respiratory diseases and mold spores? Proper ventilation means a drier atmosphere.

5. Predator-Proof Construction

Flocks are kept from predators, and daily worries are lessened with predator-proof features. Raccoons, snakes, and other animals cannot get in because a strong wire mesh is placed on windows and doors. Use hardware cloth instead of chicken wire; it lasts longer. Reinforced hinges and secure locks provide additional safety during the night. Keeping chickens safe means less time in the coop checking on them and making repairs.

6. Automatic Doors

They open and close at certain times, alleviating these morning and evening routines that complicate your lives. These doors are controlled with light sensors or timers that reduce the chances of having to inspect manually. Without any human intervention, at dawn and dusk, chickens go safely in and out. This benefit is very great for the busy or missing keepers. Running a flock consistently makes keeping them safe easier and gives one greater peace of mind.

7. Walk-In Height

An adult can stand up and walk straight into a walk-in coop to tend the chickens. This prevents backaches and slows down chores that require bending or crouching. Full-height interiors make it a lot less tiring to clean, collect eggs, and refill feeders. It also makes it somewhat easier to check birds for signs of illness. Being comfortable under daily care facilitates better long-term flock management.

8. Built-In Storage Space

Internal or nearby integrated storage saves you time in looking for poultry feed, bedding, or poultry equipment. Shelves and bins to keep supplies organized and readily available. Grain and supplements are kept in quality, weatherproofed, dry conditions. Dedicated storage minimizes running in and out of the house and coop to simplify day-to-day processes. All of the resources you need for care are available in one place.

Conclusion

The right design can turn daily chicken care from a chore into a simple, straightforward process. The design incorporates easy access doors, removable trays, and automatic systems to minimize labor while guaranteeing safety and comfort. These eleven components focus on the primary care aspects of poultry care, save time, and encourage a healthier, happier flock. Whether creating something new or improving on an existing building, spending the extra time and cash on useful features is always worth it with every trip made to visit the chickens.

How espresso grinders affect flavor, texture, and extraction

The aroma and taste of fresh espresso waft through the air, tickling the senses. The grinder is an integral part of this experience. For many coffee enthusiasts, grinders are the hidden drivers of their beverage. Openness to how grind settings and grinder types influence espresso can help anyone enjoy a more idiomatic beverage.

The Importance of Consistent Grinding

A consistent grind size leads to even extraction in your coffee. If you grind inconsistently, the fine particles will be over-extracted and the larger ones insufficiently extracted. This imbalance impacts both taste and mouthfeel. Level grounds encourage consistent water flow through the coffee, producing an even blend of flavors. A consistent grind allows baristas and hobbyists alike the ability to replicate results every time. Coffee lovers exploring a coffee grinder espresso machine often discover how grind consistency directly impacts flavor and extraction.

Impact on Flavor Profiles

How water interacts with the coffee grounds depends on the grind size. A finer grind has a larger surface area, which means the flavors will be released faster. When the particles are coarser, it slows down the extraction, resulting in lighter taste notes. An ideal environment accentuates the natural sweetness, acidity, and body of the bean. The espresso can also taste bitter or have a sour aftertaste if the settings are incorrect, making the espresso less desirable. Going through the grind adjustments can show the full range of flavors in the same bean

Influence on Texture and Mouthfeel

Texture is how an espresso saturates the tongue. The precision of the grinder directly influences this. A finer grind produces a thicker crema and silky body. You get a less viscous and airier mouthfeel with coarser grounds. A well-balanced texture adds to the overall sensation while drinking espresso. This is why many coffee shops use high-quality grinders to consistently achieve the desired mouthfeel.

Extraction: Balancing Strength and Sweetness

Extraction is the dissolution of desirable coffee compounds in water. Grinder size and consistency are important for proper extraction. If the coffee is ground too fine, it can be over-extracted, causing bitterness and astringency. A coarser grind could result in flavors that are weak and underdeveloped. With some practice in tuning the grinder, you can twiddle the buttons until you have control over the extraction. If done correctly, it creates a strong, sweet, complex cup.

One of the Differences That Exists Between Burr and Blade Grinders

The effect varies depending on the type of grinder. More serious coffee fans usually tout burr grinders, which crush beans between two abrasive surfaces instead of chopping them. Using this methodology, you can standardize your size, which will give you more control over extraction. According to the narration of Blade, grinders chop beans unevenly, resulting in fine dust and large chunks. Blade grinders lack precision: they chop the beans into an uneven jumble of sizes, leading to unpredictable flavor and texture. Burr grinders are also more reliable, and if you value quality espresso, you would be leaning towards this option.

Freshness and Aroma Preservation

Coffee beans that are ground just before brewing maintain the volatiles released by the roasting process. Because it tends to be exposed to air, pre-ground coffee loses its flavor rapidly. The grinder plays a crucial role in preserving the delicate notes of coffee, releasing them just at the right moment. This process fills out the cup with the maximum aromatic impact. Freshly ground beans are essential for a lively and inviting espresso experience.

Maintenance and Its Effects

Keeping a clean grinder aids in flavor clarity. Old coffee’s stale or bitter flavors come through in the new brews. Regular cleaning keeps oil from stacking up and helps the grinder work without a hitch. Routine cleansing maintains the true personality in every single coffee bean. Invest time in maintaining your superior qualities; you will reap their benefits consistently.

Adjusting for Bean Differences

Not every coffee bean variety reacts the same way to grinding. Generally, lighter roasts need a finer setting, whereas darker roasts need a coarser one. Setting the grinder for each batch enhances the specific characteristics of the bean. Such a practice accentuates the nuances and uniqueness factors. Noticing that different origins or roasts require different grind settings is an extremely respectful way to appreciate the coffee.

Conclusion

An espresso grinder affects every dimension of the cup, from flavor to The composition and the form of extraction is significantly influenced by the espresso grinder. Attention to the size, consistency, and maintenance of the grinder takes the process to the next level in terms of espresso. Selecting the right grinder and carefully adjusting it enables coffee enthusiasts to fully enjoy each cup. Remembering these little things opens a new layer of complexity (and love) to espresso.

Late breakthrough lifts Reggae Boyz to narrow friendly win in Grenada

Jamaica World Cup Reggae Boyz
Photo: CONCACAF

The Reggae Boyz returned to Grenada on Sunday afternoon expecting a sterner examination than their emphatic 4-1 triumph on the island two years ago, and that is precisely what they encountered.

Unlike the free-flowing success of 2023, Jamaica were forced to dig deep this time, requiring a single, late strike from substitute Nickalia Fuller to secure a 1-0 international friendly victory at the Kirani James Stadium. The result marked a winning start for interim head coach Rudolph Speid, but it was one earned through patience rather than flair.

Early stalemate as chances prove elusive

Clear scoring opportunities were scarce in the opening exchanges as both teams struggled to establish attacking rhythm. Jamaica’s best early effort arrived in the 26th minute when debutant Nickyle Ellis attempted an ambitious strike from 28 yards, but his effort sailed wide of the target.

Grenada, however, came closest to breaking the deadlock before halftime. A rapid counterattack left the hosts with a distinct numerical advantage, yet Jermaine Francis failed to capitalize, blasting his long-range attempt high and wide and allowing Jamaica a collective sigh of relief as the teams headed into the interval goalless.

Grenada threatens, Jamaica holds firm

As the match wore on, Grenada continued to probe and nearly found reward in the 76th minute. Keston Williams delivered a dangerous cross from the right that almost resulted in an own goal, with Jamaican captain Damian Lowe inadvertently redirecting the ball just past the right post of goalkeeper Amal Knight.

That moment proved to be Grenada’s last major threat.

A flurry of changes from the Jamaican bench injected fresh energy and ultimately proved decisive. The breakthrough came in the 81st minute following a fluid move down the right flank.

Dwayne Atkinson showcased his pace and balance as he glided past defender Josh Gabriel before delivering a precise low cross into the penalty area. Arriving perfectly, Nickalia Fuller kept his composure and calmly slotted home, giving Jamaica the lead and sealing the contest moments later.

Speid pleased with composure and discipline

After the final whistle, Speid expressed satisfaction with his team’s execution and adherence to tactical principles.

“I thought that we moved the ball very well. They were very composed trying to play the ball through midfield, and if that didn’t happen, I thought the players were patient enough to try something else,” Speid said. “What we’re looking for is to see if the players would play like how we train. And I think, largely, we have achieved that.”

The coach noted that further analysis would follow as the technical staff reviewed the performance.

“We’ll see if all of our tactics we had tried to employ were implemented and what we did well.”

Atkinson earns special praise

Speid also singled out Atkinson for his decisive contribution, crediting the attacker’s creativity for unlocking a stubborn defense.

“He always has a little bit of magic in him, and I thought he pulled it out today to help us to get the win.”

For Jamaica, it was not a night of spectacle, but it was one of resolve, discipline, and a timely spark that ensured a positive beginning under new leadership.

At 24, Oblique Seville captured his first National Sportsman of the Year title following a season that restored Jamaica to the summit of men’s global sprinting. His gold medal performance in the 100 meters at the Tokyo World Championships, clocking a personal best 9.77 seconds, marked the country’s first global men’s sprint title since Usain Bolt’s iconic Olympic double in 2016.

The triumph carried added weight after years of disappointment. Seville had finished fourth at the 2022 and 2023 World Championships and eighth at the 2024 Olympic Games, where injury struck in the final. Standing on the podium at last, he reflected on the long road behind him.

“When I look back at the experience in the last year, it was a special experience for me. You guys have followed my journey to see where I am coming from, to see that I have finally made it to the podium this year,” Seville said.

He credited faith, discipline, and perseverance as the foundation of his success.

“In everything that we do, put God first. My journey hasn’t been perfect. It has been built on discipline, sacrifice, and belief,” he said. “Talent may open doors, but it is consistency and character that keeps them open.”

Seville also used the moment to challenge young Jamaicans to think beyond circumstance.

“Never let where you are from limit where you are going,” he urged. “Your background is not a barrier, it is your strength.”

Clayton’s breakthrough: A dream accelerates

Tina Clayton’s coronation as National Sportswoman of the Year crowned a breakthrough season that confirmed her arrival among the world’s sprinting elite. The 21-year-old claimed her first national senior women’s 100-meter title before capturing silver at the World Championships in a personal best 10.76 seconds. She also contributed to Jamaica’s silver-medal finish in the women’s 4×100-meter relay.

Moments after receiving the sport’s highest individual honor, Clayton delivered a heartfelt and impassioned message, urging Jamaicans to remain committed to their aspirations.

“This is a humbling experience knowing that I have entered a circle of all the greats who have made Jamaica proud,” she said. “I thank Almighty God for what he has done for me throughout this season. A special thank you to my coach, Stephen Francis, for pushing me to my full potential. I have to thank the MVP Track Club also.”

A former Edwin Allen High School standout, Clayton’s rise has been years in the making. She was a four-time World Under-20 champion and remains joint holder of the world U20 record in the 4×100-meter relay. Now firmly established at senior level, she is widely viewed as a successor to sprint legends Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Elaine Thompson-Herah, and Shericka Jackson.

“I stand here tonight as an example of dreaming a dream that continues to unfold,” Clayton said. “A dream that has overcome many struggles and hardships… for myself and my family, my community, and my country.”

She ended with a call that echoed across the ceremony.

“To my fellow awardees and nominees, I urge you to continue to pursue your dreams. Greatness is a part of Jamaica’s strength.”

Excellence beyond the track

Seville earned the Sportsman of the Year nod ahead of Anthony Johnson, who delivered a historic performance by winning Jamaica’s first gold medal at the IPSC Handgun World Championship in the Production Optics Grand Senior category with a perfect score.

Sara Misir continued to blaze a trail in emerging disciplines, finishing runner-up for Sportswoman of the Year after claiming bronze in powerboating at the 2025 E1 Series Championship for Team Blue Rising. She also became the inaugural recipient of the Breakthrough Athlete of the Year award.

The ceremony also paid tribute to enduring contributions. The late Alvin Campbell was honored with the Chairman’s Award, while cricket icon Christopher Gayle received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his extraordinary, record-breaking career.

Meanwhile, the People’s Choice Performance of the Year went to horseracing standout I Dream Again, winner of the Derby.

From global sprint dominance to pioneering feats in lesser-known sports, the 2025 National Sports Awards celebrated more than medals. They honored resilience, belief, and the unyielding Jamaican spirit, embodied most powerfully by two athletes whose journeys now stand as proof that dreams, when matched with discipline, can still change destinies.
