The Reggae Boyz returned to Grenada on Sunday afternoon expecting a sterner examination than their emphatic 4-1 triumph on the island two years ago, and that is precisely what they encountered.
Unlike the free-flowing success of 2023, Jamaica were forced to dig deep this time, requiring a single, late strike from substitute Nickalia Fuller to secure a 1-0 international friendly victory at the Kirani James Stadium. The result marked a winning start for interim head coach Rudolph Speid, but it was one earned through patience rather than flair.
Early stalemate as chances prove elusive
Clear scoring opportunities were scarce in the opening exchanges as both teams struggled to establish attacking rhythm. Jamaica’s best early effort arrived in the 26th minute when debutant Nickyle Ellis attempted an ambitious strike from 28 yards, but his effort sailed wide of the target.
Grenada, however, came closest to breaking the deadlock before halftime. A rapid counterattack left the hosts with a distinct numerical advantage, yet Jermaine Francis failed to capitalize, blasting his long-range attempt high and wide and allowing Jamaica a collective sigh of relief as the teams headed into the interval goalless.
Grenada threatens, Jamaica holds firm
As the match wore on, Grenada continued to probe and nearly found reward in the 76th minute. Keston Williams delivered a dangerous cross from the right that almost resulted in an own goal, with Jamaican captain Damian Lowe inadvertently redirecting the ball just past the right post of goalkeeper Amal Knight.
That moment proved to be Grenada’s last major threat.
A flurry of changes from the Jamaican bench injected fresh energy and ultimately proved decisive. The breakthrough came in the 81st minute following a fluid move down the right flank.
Dwayne Atkinson showcased his pace and balance as he glided past defender Josh Gabriel before delivering a precise low cross into the penalty area. Arriving perfectly, Nickalia Fuller kept his composure and calmly slotted home, giving Jamaica the lead and sealing the contest moments later.
Speid pleased with composure and discipline
After the final whistle, Speid expressed satisfaction with his team’s execution and adherence to tactical principles.
“I thought that we moved the ball very well. They were very composed trying to play the ball through midfield, and if that didn’t happen, I thought the players were patient enough to try something else,” Speid said. “What we’re looking for is to see if the players would play like how we train. And I think, largely, we have achieved that.”
The coach noted that further analysis would follow as the technical staff reviewed the performance.
“We’ll see if all of our tactics we had tried to employ were implemented and what we did well.”
Atkinson earns special praise
Speid also singled out Atkinson for his decisive contribution, crediting the attacker’s creativity for unlocking a stubborn defense.
“He always has a little bit of magic in him, and I thought he pulled it out today to help us to get the win.”
For Jamaica, it was not a night of spectacle, but it was one of resolve, discipline, and a timely spark that ensured a positive beginning under new leadership.
