Buju Banton, Capt. Barrington Irving, Vybz Kartel and more support Hurricane Melissa relief efforts

Vybz Kartel with members of World Central Kitchen

The Buju Banton Foundation has joined forces with world-renowned aviator Barrington Irving and his Experience Aviation team to spearhead one of the largest humanitarian airlifts organized outside Jamaica since Hurricane Melissa struck.

The partnership is mobilizing global support to deliver 50,000 pounds of essential supplies to storm-hit communities across the island. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, is already prepped to be loaded “to capacity, inside and in its belly,” thanks to the outpouring of donations pouring in from supporters worldwide.

During a press conference in South Florida on Wednesday, Captain Barrington Irving Jr.—the Guinness World Record-holding Jamaican who became the youngest and first Black pilot to fly solo around the world—spoke of the airlift operations to Jamaica.

“This will take a monumental effort,” he said. “We’re taking 50,000 pounds of cargo at a time from South Florida to Jamaica. One of our main focuses is getting the supplies down to the island and into the hands of those who need them most.”

Irving’s nonprofit, Experience Aviation, has a strong track record in disaster relief, having delivered more than half a million pounds of humanitarian aid during major crises such as Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas and Hurricane Helene in North Carolina. The Jamaica mission’s first two flights are scheduled for next Monday and Tuesday, continuing through Thanksgiving.

“We’ve had folks call and say, ‘Hey, I have a garage filled with items—I just don’t know how to get it there,’” Irving added. “The point is to get these items into the hands of the people in need.”

Stars step up for Jamaica

As the airlift operation takes shape, Jamaica’s entertainment industry is rallying behind the recovery effort in an unprecedented show of unity.

Dancehall legend Bounty Killer has teamed up with international producer DJ Khaled to provide monetary donations through their respective foundations—The Bounty Foundation and We The Best Foundation. The funds will go toward hospitals and schools affected by the hurricane.

“Real yard man ting. Unity is everything. Love is the way,” DJ Khaled wrote to his 40 million Instagram followers, while Bounty Killer urged Jamaicans to play their part, adding, “Even one dollar is appreciated.”

Vybz Kartel and his Adidja Palmer Foundation also hit the ground this week, distributing care packages across St. James, Westmoreland, and Hanover. The artist, who recently returned to the island, joined World Central Kitchen volunteers serving hot meals to displaced residents in Montego Bay. Kartel pledged to continue his support and encouraged fellow entertainers to do the same.

Adding to the wave of global solidarity, Drake’s OVO brand announced that $100 from every “Jamaica OG Hoodie” sold between November 6 and 13 will be donated to the Rockhouse Foundation Hurricane Melissa Relief Fund.

Meanwhile, Spice—known offstage as Grace Hamilton—led a massive on-the-ground effort in Bethel Town, Westmoreland. Through her Grace Hamilton Women Empowerment Foundation, she donated ten truckloads of building materials, including blocks, cement, lumber, and zinc, to help families rebuild. She also hired equipment to clear fallen trees blocking access to remote communities.

“Nothing was stopping me from getting these trucks to the people who are now homeless because of the hurricane,” Spice said, thanking members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force who escorted her convoy for safety.

“This act of unity exemplifies the collective effort required to rebuild and uplift Jamaica, one community at a time.”

Over the past week, several other artists and industry players—including Chris Martin, Shaggy, Sean Paul, Romeich Major, Masicka, Ding Dong, and D’Angel—have also contributed to relief efforts, offering supplies, performances, and fundraising support.

The ship brought over 150 tonnes of relief material and equipment to the island.

Jamaica has received a significant shipment of hurricane relief supplies from several international partners, marking a major boost to national recovery efforts following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.

The 15-container shipment, totaling more than 150 tonnes of relief materials and equipment, arrived in Kingston aboard the Dutch Navy support ship HNLMS Pelikaan from its base in Curaçao.

The supplies include medical and health items, emergency shelter materials, power and electrical equipment, vehicles, forklifts, communication tools, and water sanitation systems — all aimed at supporting communities hardest hit by the storm.

The relief package was made possible through contributions from the European Union (EU), United Nations (UN), Kingdom of the Netherlands, Government of Canada, and the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA).

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith, was on hand at the Kingston Freeport Container Terminal to receive the shipment. She expressed deep gratitude to Jamaica’s international partners, describing them as “true friends.”

“It is times like these—times of trouble—when you know who your true friends are,” she said. “But the truth is, you are all friends who are with us even when we are not in times of trouble, because we partner together in good and in bad.”

Johnson Smith noted that while the delivery of relief supplies represents a major step in the emergency response and recovery effort, challenges remain, particularly in reaching severely affected communities where roads are still impassable.

The ship’s captain, Lieutenant Commander Max Borsboom, added that the shipment includes two pickup trucks donated by the World Food Programme, which will help responders access remote and isolated areas.

Officials said the humanitarian supplies will be distributed in coordination with local authorities to ensure timely delivery to families most in need.

Miramar approves $150K Emergency Food Assistance Program

City of Miramar

The Miramar City Commission has unanimously approved a resolution to fund a new Emergency Food Assistance Program aimed at helping residents facing food insecurity during crises.

Sponsored by Vice Mayor Yvette Colbourne, the measure allocates $150,000 for the City Manager to develop and implement a rapid-response food program that can be activated in emergencies such as natural disasters, economic hardships, or disruptions to federal nutrition assistance.

The program is timely, given that 3 million Florida families are without their November SNAP benefits: a consequence of the longest government shutdown in U.S. history. About one in eight people across Florida relies on food assistance to feed their families.

“By preparing now for emergency situations, we’re making sure that our residents have the support they need when facing difficult times,” said Colbourne. “No family in Miramar should ever have to wonder where their next meal will come from.”

The City Manager’s office will collaborate with local food banks, community organizations, and regional partners to design a sustainable food distribution system focused on accessibility and swift delivery.

City officials said additional details on eligibility, registration, and distribution logistics will be released in the coming weeks.

Grace Jerk Festival partners with Connex Air Cargo, SSMC Xpress for Jamaica hurricane relief

Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival

In response to the widespread devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa, organizers of the Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival have teamed up with Connex Air Cargo and SSMC Xpress International Couriers to deliver critical relief supplies to hard-hit communities across Jamaica.

The festival, recognized as the largest celebration of Caribbean culture, cuisine, and music in the U.S., takes place this Sunday, November 9, at Miramar Regional Park. This year, in addition to the usual food and entertainment, attendees are being asked to bring donations of non-perishable food items and hurricane supplies to support recovery efforts—particularly in Jamaica’s western rural areas, which bore the brunt of the storm’s destruction.

Supplies can be dropped off at the SSMC Xpress International Couriers booth during the event or through the festival’s broader relief collection network. Connex Air Cargo will handle air transport, airlifting supplies directly to Kingston for rapid distribution, while SSMC Xpress will coordinate collection and consolidation of items in South Florida before shipment.

“The Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival has long been a cherished celebration of Jamaican culture, and this year it takes on deeper meaning,” said Eddy Edwards, President & CEO of Jerk Festivals USA. “As our island home recovers from unimaginable devastation, we’re calling on South Florida to stand with Jamaica. ‘Wi likkle but wi tallawah’ isn’t just a saying — it’s the spirit that drives us.”

Jamaican Consul General Oliver Mair also urged members of the diaspora to contribute: “When disaster strikes at home, we feel it in our hearts no matter where we are in the world. Jamaica is hurting — but we are a resilient people. I urge everyone in South Florida to give what they can to help our families and communities rebuild an even stronger Jamaica.”

According to Luke Hamilton, Chairman of Connex Air Cargo, “This partnership is more than logistics — it’s about community, compassion, and connection. We’re honored to use our network and aircraft to deliver hope where it’s needed most.”

The first relief flight is expected to depart Miami within days, carrying food, water, clothing, and hygiene essentials. Donations will be distributed in coordination with Jamaican authorities and trusted local partners to ensure aid reaches those most in need.

Event Details:
📅 Date: Sunday, November 9, 2025

Festival organizers say this year’s event will not only celebrate Jamaica’s culture and culinary heritage — but also serve as a rallying point for compassion and solidarity in the face of tragedy.

Couples Resorts launches Disaster Relief Fund to support staff and communities after Hurricane Melissa

Couples Resorts

Jamaican-owned hospitality group Couples Resorts has announced the launch of the Couples Resorts Community Disaster Relief Fund to assist employees and nearby communities recovering from the destruction left by Hurricane Melissa.

Although the company’s properties avoided major damage and are set to reopen on December 1, many of its team members suffered severe personal losses. The fund—established through the Issa Trust Foundation, the nonprofit arm of Couples Resorts—has already raised more than US$300,000, including a US$100,000 contribution from the company itself.

“For more than 45 years, this has been a proudly Jamaican, family-run brand. When our community is hurting, we feel it deeply,” said Abe Issa, Deputy Chairman of Couples Resorts. “While we’re grateful our resorts were spared major damage, many of the incredible people who make them special have experienced real hardship. Through the Issa Trust Foundation, we’re committed to helping them recover and rebuild their lives.”

The fund will directly support staff and families with housing assistance, essential supplies, and rebuilding efforts. Current relief measures include:

  • Distributing care packages with food, water, and other essentials

  • Providing temporary housing for more than 100 displaced employees

  • Guaranteeing payment of wages for at least the next four weeks

  • Offering repair and rebuilding assistance for damaged homes

  • Partnering with World Central Kitchen, local suppliers, and water providers to deliver critical resources

“We’ve been deeply moved by the compassion shown by so many,” said Diane Pollard, President & CEO of The Issa Trust Foundation. “It’s a reminder of how much Couples Resorts means to people who want to give back. This is just the beginning—we still have a long way to go, and every contribution helps a family get back on their feet.”

Donations can be made at IssaTrustFoundation.com, with 100% of proceeds directed toward relief and recovery efforts.

While final damage assessments continue, Couples Resorts has temporarily paused guest arrivals to prioritize safety. The company plans to resume full operations on December 1, 2025.

How health supplements can complement a balanced diet

health supplements

Maintaining a balanced diet is essential for a healthy lifestyle, offering a wide range of nutrients necessary for our body to function effectively. However, achieving this balance can sometimes be challenging due to varying dietary preferences, lifestyle factors, or specific health conditions. This is where health supplements come into play. For example, incorporating certain supplements such as magnesium glycinate can help fill nutritional gaps that might exist in your diet, ensuring that you get optimal nutrition.

Supplements as a Complement, Not a Replacement
Today, more people are turning towards supplements to complement their diets, but it’s critical to understand that supplements should not replace whole foods. Food provides not only essential nutrients but also other components such as dietary fibre and antioxidants, which you simply cannot get from supplements. Whole foods contain a synergy of nutrients and other beneficial compounds that work together effectively. Nevertheless, when used wisely, health supplements can play an important role in complementing a balanced diet.

Targeting Specific Nutritional Deficiencies
One of the major benefits of health supplements is their ability to target specific nutritional deficiencies. For instance, many people, especially women, suffer from iron deficiency. Taking iron supplements can help mitigate this issue and improve their overall energy levels and immune functions. Similarly, Vitamin D supplements are often recommended for individuals who don’t get adequate sunlight exposure, particularly in countries with long winters.

Supporting Health Conditions and Specialized Needs
Supplements can also support other health conditions that might be leading to nutritional shortfalls. Omega-3 fatty acids, for instance, are known to support cardiovascular health. For those who do not consume fish regularly, omega-3 supplements can be an effective way to meet daily requirements. Probiotic supplements, on the other hand, are gaining popularity for their ability to support gut health. An imbalanced diet can often disrupt the healthy bacteria in the gut, and probiotics help restore balance and improve digestive health.

Flexibility for Dietary Restrictions
Incorporating health supplements also provides flexibility, especially for those with dietary restrictions. For instance, vegans and vegetarians might find it challenging to get sufficient Vitamin B12, as it’s predominantly found in animal products. Supplements offer an effective way to maintain their nutrient levels without compromising their dietary choices.

Choosing Safe and Effective Supplements
It’s important to remember, though, that not all supplements are created equal. The supplement industry is vast, with numerous products flooding the market, each claiming to offer significant health benefits. Therefore, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any supplement regimen. They can help determine which supplements are necessary and advise on correct dosages. Keep in mind that overconsumption of certain nutrients can have adverse health effects, a concept known as ‘megadosing’.

Potential Interactions with Medications
Moreover, supplements can sometimes interact with medications, which could pose additional hazards. It’s vital to discuss any supplement usage with a healthcare professional if you are on medication.

Integrating Supplements Wisely
In summary, health supplements can be a valuable addition to a balanced diet when used correctly. While whole foods should always remain the primary source of nutrients, supplements can offer targeted support to address specific dietary needs, fill gaps, and assist with certain health conditions. Always approach supplement usage judiciously and in consultation with a healthcare provider to ensure safety and efficacy.

By understanding the role of health supplements, we can make informed decisions about our health and nutrition, striving towards a more balanced and robust dietary regimen.

Southern Trelawny communities plead for relief after Hurricane Melissa’s wrath

Southern Trelawny

While national recovery efforts have largely focused on Jamaica’s western parishes, several communities in southern Trelawny say they’ve been left to fend for themselves after Hurricane Melissa.

Residents from Lowe River, Wait-A-Bit, Stettin, and Ulster Spring—districts bordering Manchester—say they’ve been overlooked by local and international aid workers, despite facing some of the storm’s worst impacts.

“The hurricane passed right through here and caused a lot of damage,” said Dave, a farmer from Ulster Spring. “Most of this community is farmers, and as you can see, all the yam sticks are down. Everything has been blown away. There is a lot of crop loss.”

The eye of Hurricane Melissa, which made landfall as a Category 5 system, exited Jamaica through Trelawny, leaving behind widespread destruction. Yet, residents say that while neighboring parishes have seen visible relief operations, their communities have been largely overlooked.

Across southern Trelawny, the storm triggered landslides, toppled utility poles, and tore through homes and farmlands, leaving many displaced and without power. Major roadways remain blocked or eroded, isolating communities and slowing relief efforts.

In the small hillside community of Stettin, residents continue to clear debris from what used to be homes and shops. In nearby Lowe River, uprooted trees and downed power lines still lie across key thoroughfares, with little sign of coordinated assistance.

“I’m doing the best I can to save what can be saved and build back,” said Camille Sawyer, a resident of Ulster Spring who has been staying with relatives since her roof was blown away. “But we would need assistance to put back the roof and secure items for the kids.”

With agriculture as the region’s lifeline, the economic blow will be long-lasting. Fields are flattened, crops destroyed, and farmers now face the daunting task of rebuilding with little support.

“Farming is our livelihood,” another resident shared. “If we can’t get help soon, we won’t just be dealing with hurricane damage, we’ll be dealing with hunger.”

Nearly a week after the hurricane’s passage, broken roadways, collapsed homes, and scattered debris still tell the story of Melissa’s fury. Yet amid the hardship, there is an undeniable sense of determination. Residents say that while they await assistance, they are already working together to clear roads, salvage materials, and rebuild what they can.

“We’re not giving up,” Dave added. “We just need a little help to start over.”

As national relief operations ramp up, southern Trelawny’s residents hope their calls for help will be answered before isolation deepens an already heavy burden.

Best all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean for singles

Breathless Punta Cana Resort & Spa

Singles traveling to the Caribbean face a specific problem. Most resorts cater to families or couples, leaving solo travelers eating alone at restaurants designed for two and watching honeymooners monopolize the sunset spots. The adults-only all-inclusive properties listed here solve this issue through deliberate programming, architectural choices, and staff training that create natural meeting points for unattached guests.

The Dominican Republic Dominates Singles Tourism

Breathless Punta Cana Resort & Spa operates without reservation requirements at its 13 restaurants and seven bars. Singles Getaways describes the property as a place to “meet new people from around the world” where guests can “mix and mingle” through organized social events. The resort’s Unlimited Connectivity app sends notifications about pool parties, mixology classes, and themed mixers scheduled throughout each day. Recent TripAdvisor reviews confirm that dance events and beach parties generate consistent opportunities for guest interaction.

Occidental Grand Punta Cana includes access to Mangu Disco in its all-inclusive package. Singles Getaways calls this venue “the hottest night spot in the area for tourists and locals alike.” The disco operates nightly and attracts both resort guests and Dominican locals, creating a different social dynamic than resort-only events. Guest testimonials mention spontaneous group formations for excursions and consistent mingling at the property’s multiple bars.

Resort Settings and Different Partnership Preferences

Caribbean all-inclusive resorts accommodate various relationship preferences through their programming and atmosphere. Some guests arrive looking for spontaneous vacation romance, while others seek companions who share specific interests like salsa dancing or water sports. Resorts like Breathless Punta Cana organize mixology classes and beach volleyball tournaments that naturally bring together guests with common hobbies. Other travelers might be interested in finding a sugar daddy or connecting with someone who enjoys fine dining at the resort’s premium restaurants. The poolside bars and evening entertainment create spaces where these different relationship goals can unfold organically.

Resort staff at properties like RIU Palace Macao and Gran Muthu Rainbow understand that singles arrive with varied expectations. Some guests prefer the structure of organized mixers and group excursions to Saona Island or catamaran trips. Others gravitate toward casual encounters at the swim-up bar or late-night conversations at the disco. The all-inclusive format removes financial pressure from initial meetings, allowing connections to develop based on chemistry rather than concerns about splitting bills or choosing restaurants.

Adults-Only Properties Create Different Social Dynamics

RIU Palace Macao restricts guests to adults and features 356 rooms, including Jacuzzi suites along a 16-mile beach. Singles Getaways notes the property offers “superior dining and entertainment options” across the larger RIU complex. Guest feedback consistently mentions conversations starting at pools, bars, and organized activities. The resort schedules themed parties and group events that function as structured meeting opportunities.

Majestic Colonial Punta Cana combines beachfront access with sports facilities and one of the region’s largest spas. The property promotes itself through Singles Getaways as a location where guests can “practice your favorite sports, taste exquisite gastronomy, go shopping, and enjoy the spectacular shows played by the rhythms of the Caribbean.” TripAdvisor posts from recent months describe singles mixers and dance classes as effective connection points.

Smaller Properties Offer Different Advantages

Punta Cana Princess All Suites Resort provides butler service and complimentary access to sister properties Caribe Club and Tropical Princess. Singles Getaways emphasizes the resort’s “focus on service” and VIP packages that include massages, premium drinks, and room service. The cross-property access expands social options beyond the base resort’s guest list, increasing potential connections through a larger pool of travelers.

Gran Muthu Rainbow in Cuba’s Cayo Guillermo markets specifically to LGBTQ+ guests. Experience Transat describes the property as “known for its LGBTQ+ community and memorable theme nights.” Guest testimonials confirm that theme nights function as connection facilitators, while the Playa Pilar beachfront encourages group beach games and sunset gatherings. The resort’s focused demographic creates a different social atmosphere than general adults-only properties.

Geographic Variety Beyond Punta Cana

Jamaica offers RIU Palace Jamaica Adults Only and Grand Palladium Jamaica Resort & Spa, both featuring pool parties, beach barbecues, and themed nights aimed at singles and couples seeking connections, according to Singles Getaways. Jewel Runaway Bay Beach & Golf Resort continues operating singles-oriented events following its transition from the Breezes brand.

Renaissance Wind Creek Aruba Resort appears in TripAdvisor’s 2025 rankings as suitable for single travelers. Reviews describe the property as “great for singles & families,” though its urban location provides less beach access than competing resorts. The all-inclusive option covers standard amenities while maintaining proximity to Aruba’s nightlife beyond resort boundaries.

Programming That Facilitates Connections

Club Med operates Zen Oasis in Punta Cana and Turkoise in Turks & Caicos as adults-only properties. The brand describes Zen Oasis as offering either “a stay in complete serenity or a social” atmosphere through activities ranging from yoga to beach volleyball to nightclub events. These scheduled activities provide structure for guests uncomfortable with purely organic social situations.

Properties now distribute daily bulletins or maintain apps listing activities curated for singles. Mixology classes teach cocktail preparation while creating small group interactions. Group excursions to local attractions or snorkeling sites place strangers together for extended periods. Language exchange events attract international guests seeking cultural connections alongside romantic possibilities.

Practical Considerations for Solo Travelers

All-inclusive pricing eliminates awkward payment negotiations during initial meetings. Guests can invite new acquaintances to dinner without financial implications. Swim-up bars and beach lounges provide neutral territory for conversations that can end gracefully or extend naturally.

Adults-only policies at these resorts restrict guests below 18 or 21, creating mature social atmospheres. Properties like Breathless Punta Cana and RIU Palace Macao design communal spaces including pools, bars, and beach clubs to encourage guest proximity. Dedicated staff coordinate social programming at resorts like Gran Muthu Rainbow and Club Med properties.

Sandals Royal Bahamian appears on recommendation lists but primarily serves couples. Grand Isle Resort in the Bahamas accepts families, diluting the singles-focused atmosphere. Paradisus Palma Real Golf & Spa Resort in Punta Cana receives praise for social interaction, with TripAdvisor reviews noting exceptional food and ambiance across all restaurants.

These Caribbean properties succeed by acknowledging that single travelers seek connection opportunities without forced interaction. The combination of structured activities and organic meeting spaces allows guests to control their social engagement level while maximizing potential connections.

Rebuilding after divorce: Legal, financial, and emotional checklists for families

divorce Florida

Divorce changes everything. It can feel like your world has been turned upside down. You may feel relief that the hard part is over, but at the same time, you might feel lost about what to do next. It’s normal to feel uncertain. Rebuilding your life takes time, and knowing where to begin can make the process easier.

Starting fresh means looking at every part of your life again. You’ll need to handle legal paperwork, review your finances, and take care of your emotional health. Each step matters, and they all connect. The good news is that with some structure and patience, you can create a new path that feels steady and secure. This guide breaks down what to focus on first so you can move forward with confidence.

1. Legal Checklist: Protecting Your Future

After a divorce, it’s important to make sure your legal documents match your new situation. Many people put this off because they think it’s too complicated, but it’s one of the smartest steps you can take. Updating your legal paperwork ensures that your rights and wishes are protected, especially if you have children or shared property.

Start with the key documents that control your estate and decision-making power. Review your will and your power of attorney documents carefully. Many people wonder about power of attorney vs will and which one they actually need. The truth is, both are essential. A power of attorney helps someone act on your behalf if you become unable to make decisions while you’re still alive. A will, on the other hand, takes effect after your death. Reviewing both after a divorce ensures that your former spouse no longer has legal authority over your personal or financial matters unless you want them to.

Next, update your beneficiary designations. This includes life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and any savings plans where you may have listed your ex-spouse as the recipient. Many people forget to do this and later find out that their assets could go to the wrong person.

2. Financial Checklist: Building Stability Step by Step

Divorce often means starting over financially. You may be adjusting to a single income, dividing property, or handling shared debts. It can feel overwhelming, but taking small, clear steps helps you gain stability and peace of mind.

Begin by creating a new budget that fits your current reality. Write down your income and every expense, including rent, utilities, food, childcare, and insurance. This helps you see exactly where your money goes and what needs adjusting.

If you shared accounts with your ex-spouse, close or separate them. Open new checking and savings accounts in your name only. Update direct deposits from your employer and any automatic payments or subscriptions. This ensures that you have full control of your funds and helps prevent confusion later.

Next, review your credit report. Divorce can affect your credit score, especially if there are unpaid joint debts. Check for any loans, credit cards, or accounts that still list both names. Contact lenders to remove your ex-spouse or settle remaining balances. Monitoring your credit will help you spot mistakes early.

3. Emotional Checklist: Healing and Moving Forward

Divorce affects your emotions just as much as your finances and legal matters. It’s a major life change that can leave you feeling drained, even if you know it was the right decision. Taking care of your emotional health is just as important as handling your paperwork.

Start by acknowledging your feelings. It’s normal to feel sadness, anger, or confusion. These emotions come in waves, and that’s okay. Talking about them helps. You might want to reach out to a counselor or join a support group. Sharing your story with others who understand can make you feel less alone.

If you have children, focus on open communication. Divorce can be confusing for them, and they may have their own fears. Keep routines steady so they feel safe and supported. When co-parenting, try to keep discussions with your ex-spouse focused on your children’s needs, not past issues. Clear boundaries help reduce tension.

Rebuilding after divorce is not about rushing through a checklist. It’s about finding balance again. The legal, financial, and emotional parts of your life are connected, and each one supports the other. Updating your documents gives you legal protection. Managing your money brings financial confidence. Taking care of your mental health gives you the strength to keep going.

You don’t have to do it all alone. Seek professional advice when you need it. Talk to trusted friends or family for support. Every small decision you make now builds a stronger future.

You have already made it through one of the hardest parts. Now it’s about rebuilding in a way that feels steady, safe, and hopeful. This new chapter is yours to create, one step at a time.

Hollywood Police Lieutenant placed on leave after allegedly shoving elderly woman

Hollywood Police Lieutenant

A lieutenant with the Hollywood Police Department was arrested Monday on two counts of domestic battery involving a person 65 years of age or older, authorities confirmed.

Osvaldo Perez, 50, a 25-year veteran of the department who lives in Southwest Ranches, allegedly “grabbed and pushed” a 65-year-old woman into a parked vehicle on Sunday near the 4300 block of Southwest 148th Terrace in Miramar, causing her to fall and fracture her shoulder.

Perez turned himself in to the Broward Sheriff’s Office without incident and was being held Wednesday at the Broward Main Jail on a $75,000 bond, according to jail records. He has since bonded out.

Hollywood Police Chief Jeff Devlin emphasized that the department is taking the allegations seriously. “Lt. Perez has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of this investigation,” Devlin said in a statement.

Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances of the arrest, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Mother of missing 10-year-old Gabrielle Terrelonge arrested for child neglect

Gabrielle Patricia Terrelonge

The mother of 10-year-old Gabrielle Patricia Terrelonge was arrested Tuesday in Margate on a child neglect charge as authorities continue their search for the girl, who has been missing for more than four months.

According to court records, 34-year-old Passha Davis appeared before a judge on Wednesday, where her bond was set at $100,000. She was ordered to wear an ankle monitor and undergo a mental health evaluation.

Gabrielle’s family believes Davis may know the girl’s whereabouts but has not provided authorities with any information. During the hearing, the judge asked whether Davis knew where Gabrielle was. Prosecutors replied, “She hasn’t given any piece of information, but the last time she saw the child, anything.”

Investigators said Gabrielle was last seen on June 21 in Broward County, but she was not reported missing until Oct. 29, after Davis was arrested in Florida for shoplifting from a Dollar Tree in Margate. The FBI Miami Field Office, Margate Police Department, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement confirmed Gabrielle remains missing and at risk. Her disappearance was upgraded to a Missing Child Alert earlier this week.

Gabrielle is described as a Black female, about 4 feet 8 inches tall, weighing 100 pounds, with shoulder-length black hair. She was last seen wearing a white T-shirt, black long pants, and white Crocs. Authorities said Gabrielle is known to travel between Central and South Florida with family members and may have been with Davis before her arrest.

Gabrielle’s aunt, who requested anonymity, said she has been trying to gain custody of the girl, noting that Gabrielle and her mother had been living on the streets. “We don’t have any clue where she is,” the aunt said. “Her family loves her, and we are looking for her and would like her to return safely and be with us away from harm.” She added that Gabrielle had told her she wanted a stable home rather than continuing to live on the streets.

With Davis behind bars and few leads on Gabrielle’s location, her family continues to hold onto hope. “Her family loves her, and she knows that her aunt loves her,” the aunt said. “My worst fear is that Gabrielle is not alive.”

Davis now faces child neglect charges. Anyone with information about Gabrielle’s whereabouts is urged to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI, submit a tip online at tips.fbi.gov, or call the Margate Police Department at 954-972-7111 or 911.

Four Margate Middle School students hospitalized after suspected marijuana-laced snacks

Margate Middle School

Four students at Margate Middle School were hospitalized on Wednesday after consuming snacks believed to contain marijuana, officials said. According to Margate Fire Rescue, seven to eight students were exposed on campus, with four transported to a hospital for evaluation, while the others were released to their parents. All are in stable condition.

Authorities said it remains unclear what type of snacks were ingested, but preliminary reports indicate they may have been marijuana edibles.

In a statement, Broward County Public Schools confirmed:

“The school’s administration confirmed several students were treated and four students were transported for medical evaluation today after consuming candy or food believed to have been laced with an unknown substance. Out of an abundance of caution, emergency services were contacted immediately and students received appropriate care. School and District administrators are working with authorities to determine the source of the food and ensure student safety. Parents are reminded to speak to their child(ren) about not sharing or eating food or candy that does not come from home and to report anything concerning to a trusted adult.”

South Florida airports among 40 nationwide facing FAA flight reductions

Miami International Airport

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced Wednesday that it will cut flight capacity by up to 10% at 40 major airports across the country, including South Florida’s Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Miami International Airport.

The move comes amid the longest U.S. federal shutdown in history, which has left 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents working without pay.

FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the reductions will go into effect Friday morning, starting at 4% and gradually increasing to 10% of flights scheduled between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. The cuts apply primarily to domestic flights, with international routes exempt. The FAA is still finalizing its official order, expected Thursday, which will include detailed guidance on the reductions.

“Our sole role is to make sure that we keep this airspace as safe as possible,” Bedford said during the press conference. “This is not about light airline travel locations. It’s about where the pressure is and how to really deviate the pressure.” Duffy added that if the shutdown continues into next week, the FAA could be forced to shut down airspace in some areas.

United Airlines said it will not cut long-haul international or hub-to-hub flights. Customers seeking refunds on affected flights, including non-refundable or basic economy tickets, will be able to do so, with updates sent via app, email, and push notifications. Airlines for America, a trade association representing major U.S. carriers, said it is working with the federal government to understand the mandate and mitigate passenger and cargo impacts.

List of airports facing reductions:

Sources indicate that the reductions could begin as early as Thursday, though the FAA has not yet confirmed that schedule. The agency said it will consider factors such as airlines that already operate less-than-daily services at a given airport when finalizing cuts.

Passengers planning to travel through South Florida airports over the weekend are advised to check their airline apps for updates and prepare for potential delays or cancellations.

Steps accident lawyers take to collect evidence

lawyer

Every day, Tampa’s busy roads see hundreds of vehicles navigating everything from rush-hour traffic to unpredictable weather conditions. With numerous drivers on the road, accidents are an unfortunate reality throughout the city. In 2024 alone, Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported more than 26,000 vehicle crashes, leaving over 17,000 people injured and nearly 180 lives lost. With numbers like these, it’s clear how vital it is to have strong legal support in the event of an accident.

That’s where the experienced attorneys from Brooks Law Group step in. For Tampa residents facing the aftermath of an accident, the firm takes critical steps to collect evidence, including reconstructing crash scenes, securing surveillance footage, preserving vehicle data, and gathering witness statements. This process is foundational for turning a chaotic aftermath into a structured case. In this post, we will discuss the process lawyers follow to document in preparation for reproduction.

Initial Consultation and Case Evaluation

Each case starts with an in-depth conversation between the lawyer and client. In this meeting, the victim shares their perspective on the events. The lawyer listens intently, takes notes, and asks clarifying questions about any areas of uncertainty. These primary details indicate areas that should be explored further and which documents may need to be obtained.

Securing Police Reports

Attorneys typically begin with the official accident report. These documents provide critical information and insights from the initial responding officials on the scene. Police reports typically include sketches, witness statements, and preliminary conclusions about potential suspects. Lawyers review the documents to identify discrepancies or omissions that may impact the case.

Photographing the Scene

Prompt photographs provide a realistic depiction of the accident site. Lawyers or their employees visit the location and take pictures from various angles. They are also trained on road markings, traffic signs, and other hazards that may be present around them. The images help to reconstruct the events, but also give a glimpse into the conditions under which this occurred.

Gathering Physical Evidence

Physical evidence can be informative as to how the event occurred. Lawyers compile all the property damages, including cars, clothing, and any other items that may have been involved in the incident. They preserve every object in its original format. Doing so avoids any suspicion of tampering with the evidence and maintains the integrity of the evidence.

Interviewing Witnesses

Eyewitness testimonies are generally one of the best means to decide what caused an accident. Lawyers identify witnesses to what happened, interview them, and collect statements. Each individual’s memory is recorded, sometimes documented in a written affidavit for further accuracy. These testimonials can support or contradict others, providing additional color to the investigation.

Obtaining Medical Records

Medical documentation plays a key role in injury claims. Attorneys seek records from the hospitals, clinics, and doctors who cared for the victim. They document the type of injuries, treatment received, and what the future holds in terms of their health. Good medical evidence helps substantiate a claim for damages by establishing a connection between the accident and the injuries suffered.

Requesting Surveillance Footage

Accidents are frequently recorded when they happen, either by businesses or traffic camera footage. Attorneys line up locations where videos may be taken and file formal requests for them to be used in court. This process must be fast because sometimes you may find that the video files are deleted after a short span. Recorded images can illuminate events and facilitate the resolution of disputes regarding what actually occurred.

Reviewing Expert Opinions

In some complex cases, you might need specialist input. Lawyers hired experts from the fields of accident reconstruction, engineering, or medicine. They review evidence and provide independent judgment. Their testimony can give evidence as to liability, the extent of injury, or the events leading up to the injury.

Documenting Losses and Expenses

If the injured party has evidence of all losses, they have a complete case. To demonstrate the financial impact, legal teams collect receipts, invoices, wage statements, and other relevant documents. There could be better documentation of their medical bills, repair costs, and time away from work. Proper documentation helps facilitate accurate settlement negotiations.

Preserving Digital Evidence

These days, however, most modern accidents have some form of digital device in front of them. Attorneys pull data from phones, car recorders, or navigation systems. Electronic data provides vital information on your speed, location, and communications that can be generated before or even during the incident. To ensure the integrity of this type of digital proof, legal practitioners adhere to particular protocols.

Organizing and Presenting Evidence

After all of the materials have been gathered, an attorney assembles everything in a logical order. Timelines, photographs with captions, and indexed documents form a straight line. When preparing for negotiations or a trial, a presentation helps ensure you communicate information effectively. Good organization also permits a rapid response to interrogatories or questions posed by judges, insurance companies, or opposing counsel.

Final Thoughts

A successful claim of an accident requires substantial evidence. Legal professionals follow a methodical process to gather, preserve, and present evidence in support of a case. For this reason, diligent investigation and attention to detail are the most important factors in obtaining a fair result for injured people. From the initial consultation to the final presentation, every step is crucial in constructing a successful case.

What to expect when hiring a truck accident lawyer

lawyer personal injury claim

Kissimmee, Florida, is known for its busy roadways that connect neighborhoods, theme park traffic, and commercial trucking routes that move goods across the region. With so many travelers sharing the same streets, accidents involving large trucks can occur in an instant, leaving people feeling shaken and unsure of what comes next. After such an experience, many find themselves facing medical appointments, vehicle repairs, and conversations with insurance representatives while still trying to understand the cause of the crash.

In these moments, the idea of seeking legal guidance often arises, not as a luxury but as a source of direction and relief. People may have questions about what hiring a lawyer involves, how the first meeting works, or what types of documents and details they will need to gather. Knowing what the process entails may help ease your mind about beginning this step with a dedicated Kissimmee truck accident legal team.

Initial Consultation and Case Review

During your first meeting with a legal professional, they will usually converse with you about the incident. The attorney gathers facts about the event from this conversation. Documents such as police reports and medical records are relevant at this stage. A good lawyer will also be able to determine if you have a viable case and what the outcome will be. People have the opportunity to ask questions and raise any concerns during this step.

Explanation of Fees and Agreements

In initial conversations, the attorney will explain legal expenses. The majority of truck accident lawyers will charge a contingency fee, which means that you will only have to pay them if they win your case. Such an arrangement limits the risk for clients. The lawyer will send a contract, and you will be required to read and sign it. It is essential to have clear terms on costs and responsibilities at this stage, before proceeding further.

Investigation and Evidence Gathering

After hiring a legal team, they will begin to investigate the event that has occurred. Building evidence is crucial to making a strong claim. This procedure typically involves analyzing accident reports, inspecting the car damage, and gathering witness statements. Sometimes, experts like accident reconstruction experts take care of complex details. A thorough investigation bolsters the client’s case during negotiations or trial.

Communication with Insurance Companies

Without legal experience, it can be challenging to negotiate with insurance companies. The lawyer often takes over all communication with the insurers, thereby eliminating the need for the client to handle these aspects. It minimizes pressure and reduces the likelihood of errors. Your attorney will advocate for straightforward payouts and ensure that individuals understand their correct status throughout these transactions. Most lawsuits settle without going to court through effective negotiation and mediation.

Assessment of Damages and Losses

A legal advisor also has one of the most essential duties, and that is to assess the overall consequences of the accident. They consider medical bills, repair expenses, lost wages, and other losses. This assessment also includes pain and suffering, emotional distress, and needs that will arise financially in the time to come. By conducting a thorough evaluation, one can ensure that the claim accurately reflects all damages. Your lawyer collaborates with medical practitioners and other such professionals whenever necessary.

Filing Legal Documents and Meeting Deadlines

Legal matters require thorough documentation and adherence to specific timelines and deadlines. Your attorney prepares and files all necessary documents in a timely fashion, as needed. A delay in filing can have disastrous consequences; therefore, it is crucial to file as soon as possible. That carefulness is part of how a law firm protects its clients’ interests throughout the process. Your lawyer will closely monitor the case and notify clients of the steps they will likely need to take, as well as any critical developments.

Negotiation and Settlement Discussions

Most truck accident claims settle, as opposed to going to trial. Your attorney will discuss with the opposing party to come up with a proper settlement. During these discussions, the client must present evidence and supporting documentation to help strengthen their case. The attorney will discuss options if a reasonable offer is received, and counsel clients on whether to settle or explore alternative options.

Conclusion

The steps taken to hire a truck accident lawyer are essential in most cases because the interests of consumers differ from those of lawyers. Legal representation also provides a sense of comfort when considering the idea of attending court, from the initial meeting through to the actual court appearance. Knowing what to expect can give people greater confidence and peace of mind as they go through the process. Choosing a skilled attorney can be pivotal in determining the outcome of your truck accident claim.

Hope and Chase inspire West Indies to dramatic Eden Park T20 triumph

Prolific Hope embracing new responsibilities

The West Indies opened their five-match T20 International series against New Zealand in dramatic fashion on Wednesday, clawing their way to a seven-run victory at Eden Park after defending a modest total of 164.

It was a night defined by leadership, nerve, and late drama — as Shai Hope’s composed half-century and Roston Chase’s all-round brilliance paved the way for a memorable triumph.

Their total, the lowest ever successfully defended at the iconic Auckland venue, seemed far from enough until a spirited bowling performance flipped the script.

Early struggles and a captain’s stand

Asked to bat first, the West Indies found themselves in early turmoil on a lively pitch offering bounce and movement. Jacob Duffy struck in the first over to remove Brandon King for three, before Kyle Jamieson and Jimmy Neesham combined to send back Alick Athanaze (16) and Akeem Auguste (2), reducing the visitors to 43 for 3.

But captain Shai Hope stood firm amid the collapse. After a measured start, he found rhythm and authority, carving out a crucial 53 from 39 deliveries — a knock of restraint and resolve. Hope’s innings became the backbone of the effort, as he stitched together vital partnerships to revive the innings.

Roston Chase joined him for a stabilizing stand of 54 for the fourth wicket, before adding another 49 alongside Rovman Powell (33), who rode his luck after being dropped twice. A late cameo from Romario Shepherd helped nudge the total to a fighting 164 for 6 — a scoreline that appeared below par but would soon prove just enough.

For New Zealand, Duffy was the standout performer with the ball, returning figures of 2 for 19 in a disciplined four-over spell.

Forde and Chase turn the tide

The West Indies’ defense began with renewed fire. Returning pacer Matthew Forde, playing his first competitive game since July, unleashed a searing opening spell. His sharp pace and swing rattled the New Zealand top order, and he clean-bowled Devon Conway for 13 in a spell that cost just nine runs from his first three overs.

Then came Roston Chase’s moment. On a ground famous for its short boundaries, Chase bowled with precision and guile, exploiting every ounce of turn and drift. His figures of 3 for 26 tore through the Kiwi middle order, while Jayden Seales joined the assault with three wickets of his own (3 for 32), leaving the hosts teetering at 107 for 9 in the 17th over.

Santner’s counterattack stuns Eden Park

Just as the West Indies seemed poised for a comfortable victory, Mitchell Santner unleashed a breathtaking counterattack that sent shockwaves through Eden Park. The New Zealand skipper smashed an unbeaten 55 from just 28 balls, launching the ball to all corners in a desperate solo effort to drag his side back into contention.

His onslaught included a blistering 23-run over off Forde that reignited the contest, bringing the Black Caps within touching distance. The equation boiled down to 20 needed from the final over — and when Santner clubbed a six off Romario Shepherd, tension rippled through the ground.

But Shepherd kept his composure, delivering under pressure to close out the match by seven runs, sparking jubilation in the West Indies camp and relief across their dressing room.

Rampaul praises team spirit and execution

Bowling coach Ravi Rampaul hailed the collective effort that secured the victory, particularly the team’s ability to adapt quickly to foreign conditions.

“We’re very happy with our performance,” Rampaul said. “We didn’t have much time here, and seeing how the guys performed — the energy they brought and the execution under pressure — was really commendable.”

The win gives the West Indies a 1-0 lead in the series, and more importantly, momentum and belief as they continue their tour in New Zealand.

Carriacou Corn Festival returns stronger than ever for ts 10th anniversary

Carriacou Corn Festival

The sister isle of Carriacou came alive on Sunday, October 26, as residents and visitors celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Carriacou Corn Festival — marking both a cultural milestone and the island’s remarkable recovery from Hurricane Beryl’s devastation in 2024.

After the first cancellation in its history last year, the festival’s return was a powerful symbol of renewal, unity, and pride. Since its launch in 2015, the Corn Festival has highlighted the versatility of one of the Caribbean’s most important crops — transforming corn into everything from traditional favorites to creative new treats. This year’s offerings included corn wine, cornmeal ice cream, savory corn puddings, and corn dumplings, underscoring the grain’s central place in local cuisine.

“One of the things we have endeavoured to do is to have something new every year — something different — and we’ve managed to do that over the years,” said Dexter Leggard, Coordinator of the Carriacou Corn Festival. “This year is no exception, as we’re looking at new products we can derive from corn.”

Beyond food, the festival pulsed with culture and tradition. String band music echoed across the venue, while the children’s corn float parade delighted onlookers and passed down the island’s cherished customs to a new generation. Exhibits showcased Carriacou’s agricultural heritage, with displays of hand-held mills and other historical tools that paid tribute to the island’s farming past.

“This year’s Carriacou Corn Festival goes beyond a culinary event — it’s a beacon of cultural resilience and innovation,” said Stacey Liburd, Chief Executive Officer of the Grenada Tourism Authority. “Seeing this tradition return in such vibrant form after the challenges of Hurricane Beryl is truly inspiring. We are proud to support Carriacou as it reclaims its space on the cultural map, drawing visitors from near and far to experience its warmth, creativity, and spirit.”

Minister for Tourism, Senator the Hon. Adrian Thomas, also praised the festival’s organizers and the wider community for their commitment to preserving and promoting Carriacou’s cultural identity.

“The success of this year’s Corn Festival is a reminder of the rich traditions and boundless creativity that define Carriacou and Petite Martinique,” Thomas said. “The Ministry of Tourism, the Creative Economy and Culture remains dedicated to turning our cultural heritage into sustainable opportunities that benefit our people and strengthen our nation’s tourism future.”

While this year’s festival celebrated the many ways corn continues to inspire culinary artistry, it also signaled a new chapter in Carriacou’s cultural calendar. The Grenada Tourism Authority reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Carriacou and Petite Martinique as vibrant, culturally rich destinations within the tri-island state.

Holness: Bodies may be exhumed to confirm Hurricane Melissa death toll

Andrew Holness Jamaica

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has pledged to ensure that every Jamaican who died as a result of Hurricane Melissa is properly accounted for — even if it means exhuming bodies that have already been buried.

Speaking in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Holness said the government is determined to get an accurate death toll following reports that residents in some of the hardest-hit communities have begun burying victims themselves.

“The accurate account of deaths is of particular concern,” Holness told lawmakers. “We know of deaths, but we still haven’t recovered all the bodies. However, to be clear, even if it means exhuming the bodies, we will recover them all. We will also go through the process of proper identification, and where possible, determine the cause of death. The science is there, and we will do this.”

He was responding to questions from Opposition Member of Parliament Dr. Dayton Campbell, who represents Westmoreland Eastern — the parish said to have suffered the greatest loss of life. Campbell reported that of the 32 confirmed deaths so far, 25 were from his constituency.

Campbell questioned whether the response to recover bodies had been adequate, noting that in some areas, “funeral homes came for some, while the community had to bury other members.”

Holness acknowledged the challenges but said the government’s forensic teams are on-site in the affected areas, including Westmoreland, to identify bodies and determine whether deaths were directly or indirectly caused by the Category 5 storm.

He also urged Jamaicans to brace for the possibility that the official death toll could rise. “We must account for each Jamaican who died because we also have to account to the families of those Jamaicans and understand the full impact of this disaster,” he said. “It’s really unfortunate, but it’s just the reality when you get hit by a hurricane of Category Five.”

Across the Caribbean, Hurricane Melissa has claimed a total of 75 lives so far.

Haiti’s Civil Protection Directorate said 43 people were killed and at least seven others remain missing, while nearly 12,000 homes were flooded and hundreds destroyed or damaged.

Guyana announces GY$150,000 cash grant and tax breaks for fisherfolk

The Guyana government will roll out a new round of financial and tax relief measures, including a GUY$150,000 (US$600) cash grant for every registered fisherfolk, as part of efforts to boost the fisheries sector and support livelihoods in coastal and riverine communities.

President Irfaan Ali made the announcement this week, noting that the initiative is both a subsidy and an incentive for those working in the fishing industry. “We’re going to give GUY$150,000 to every fisherfolk out there to help them as an incentive and subsidy from the government,” Ali said.

He added that the administration will also remove taxes on key materials used in fishing — including fuel and seines — to reduce operational costs and increase profitability. “Before the end of the year, I will announce a series of measures not only looking at cash grants, but looking at the total empowerment of every Guyanese — whether you are someone living with a disability, the elderly, children, women, small businesses, or farmers,” Ali said.

The move builds on previous government support to the sector. In 2022, more than GUY$1.1 billion in grants was distributed to over 7,500 fisherfolk nationwide. The administration has also invested in modernizing landing and processing facilities, offering technical training, and promoting sustainable and climate-resilient fishing practices.

To ensure smooth and transparent distribution of the new cash grants, President Ali urged citizens to open bank accounts. The programme follows several recent social interventions, including last year’s GUY$100,000 cash grant for every adult, the GUY$50,000 “Because We Care” student grant, and the GUY$100,000 Newborn Grant.

Ali said the upcoming package of support measures will target a wide range of vulnerable and working-class groups as part of his government’s “One Guyana” vision for inclusive development.

Former Suriname President Ronald Venetiaan dies at 89

Ronald Venetiaan

Ronald Venetiaan, Suriname’s three-time president and one of the country’s most respected political figures, died on Wednesday, November 5, at the age of 89, his family announced.

President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons described Venetiaan as “a statesman and a great son of the nation, who dedicated his life to serving Suriname,” praising his “significant role in the country’s development” and “commitment to education, democracy, and good governance.” Former president Chan Santokhi, who served under Venetiaan as justice minister, called him an “exceptional statesman” whose death “leaves a great void.”

Born in Paramaribo in 1936, Venetiaan studied mathematics in the Netherlands before returning home to teach and later serve as Suriname’s minister of education after independence in 1975. He was removed from office following the 1980 coup led by Dési Bouterse, after which he resumed teaching at the Anton de Kom University.

Following the restoration of democracy in 1987, Venetiaan reentered politics as chairman of the National Party of Suriname (NPS) and again became minister of education. He was first elected president in 1991, serving until 1996, then returned to power in 2000 and was re-elected in 2005, leading the country until 2010.

A mathematician and author, Venetiaan also wrote poetry under the pseudonyms Vene and Krumanty, with some of his works performed in local theatre productions. He contributed to Santokhi’s 2020 publication We gaan Suriname redden (We Are Going to Save Suriname).

Venetiaan retired from politics in 2013, saying it was time for the younger generation to take the lead. He is survived by his wife, Liesbeth Vanenburg, three daughters, and a son.

Grenada PM defends raising legal marriage age to 18 to protect minors

Grenada to deport 15 Haitians
Grenada Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell

The Grenadian Parliament has approved an amendment to the 1966 Marriage Act, officially raising the legal age of marriage from 16 to 18, even with parental consent. The move, Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell said, is aimed at strengthening protections for children and aligning the nation’s laws with modern standards of child welfare.

“This amendment to the Marriage Act is part of a broader series of legislation… to modernise and to get protection to our children,” Mitchell told the House of Representatives during debate on November 4. He noted that the decision ensures that “vulnerable children are not married off at the consent of their parents.”

Under Grenadian law, a child is defined as any person under 18 years of age. The revised Marriage Act now brings that definition in line with other national policies, such as the 2011 Age of Civil Responsibility Act, which sets 18 as the age of civil responsibility.

The Prime Minister, a lawyer by profession, said the amendment also prevents Grenada from being exploited by “nefarious actors” who might take advantage of financially vulnerable families by arranging child marriages. “At 16, they will be barely leaving high school,” he said, warning that the old law created loopholes that endangered minors.

Mitchell also addressed public controversy surrounding a separate, not-yet-tabled bill — the Amendment to the Age of Civil Responsibility Bill — which would allow minors aged 12 and older to access sexual and reproductive healthcare without parental consent. He said the intent of that proposed measure is to give children medical access, not to encourage sexual activity.

“I have not heard the same set of people making all this noise talk about the existing laws on our books, which permit our children to be married off and to engage in sex,” he said. “We have to resist the temptation for sensation and random woke conspiracy theories when it comes to how this administration seeks to protect our children.”

Mitchell added that his government aims for consistency across all laws governing adulthood, noting that 18 is already the age for voting, obtaining a driver’s license, and acquiring a national ID card. “We are seeking to get consistency,” he said, adding that exceptions may still apply in specific cases, such as access to healthcare.

Antigua and Barbuda rejects report claiming heightened Canadian travel warning

Antigua and Barbuda

The Antigua and Barbuda government on Wednesday dismissed as false an online report suggesting that Canada had issued a heightened travel advisory for the twin-island Caribbean nation.

“Antigua and Barbuda is one of the Caribbean’s most peaceful democracies,” said the country’s non-resident High Commissioner to Canada, Sir Ronald Sanders, in a statement. “The country is politically stable, constitution-anchored, and committed to free and fair elections observed by international bodies.”

Sir Ronald emphasized that Canada’s official advisory for Antigua and Barbuda remains at “Take normal security precautions,” the lowest possible level. “There has been no upgrade and no new risk designation,” he said, rejecting claims published by Travel and Tour World.

He added that Antigua and Barbuda maintains low rates of serious crime compared to regional averages, citing data from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the World Bank. “Violent incidents are rare, and our islands continue to enjoy a reputation for safety and tranquility among international visitors,” Sir Ronald noted.

The diplomat said the government has called on the publication to correct its report and to reference official Canadian sources properly. “Our welcoming people live by reputation and reality; we refuse to let careless reports blur either,” he said.

Sir Ronald, who also serves as Antigua and Barbuda’s ambassador to the United States and the Organization of American States (OAS), reaffirmed that the nation remains a safe destination for visitors. “We welcome Canadians as friends, investors, and family to a safe, vibrant, and law-abiding nation that keeps faith with its Constitution and with the travellers who honour our shores,” he said.

Haiti renews appeal for international help as gangs tighten grip on capital

Laurent Saint-Cyr Haiti

Haiti’s Transitional Presidential Council (TPC) is calling on the international community to urgently support efforts to restore security in the crisis-hit Caribbean nation, where armed gangs have taken control of much of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and nearby communities.

“I specifically call on all states to make effective contributions to the Gang Suppression Force (GSF), approved by the United Nations Security Council on September 30,” said TPC President Laurent Saint-Cyr, addressing the second World Summit for Social Development. “Making the Gang Repression Force operational as soon as possible, while learning from the experience of the Multinational Security Support Mission, is an imperative of international solidarity.”

The GSF, authorized to deploy up to 5,550 personnel, will focus on dismantling gangs, protecting key infrastructure, and securing humanitarian access. Saint-Cyr said the mission’s activation is essential for restoring stability and advancing social development in Haiti, adding that “the social development that the Haitian people and people around the world deserve requires peace, stability and security.”

Created in April 2024, the TPC is tasked with leading Haiti to free and credible elections once order is restored. Saint-Cyr reaffirmed the council’s commitment to improving security with international backing, rebuilding the economy, and supporting displaced citizens. He also noted ongoing efforts to reintegrate children and young people previously involved with armed groups through vocational programs.

The Haitian leader thanked international partners for their support following Hurricane Melissa, which caused widespread damage and highlighted the country’s vulnerability. The government reported on Tuesday that 43 people have died, 21 were injured, and 13 remain missing after landslides and flooding ravaged more than 30 towns in the southwest.

Saint-Cyr said the government’s priorities include security, humanitarian relief, elections, and economic recovery — but stressed that Haiti needs sustained investment rather than short-term aid. “Development requires peace, security, and stability,” he said, urging global partners to stand in solidarity with the Haitian people.
