The government of Antigua and Barbuda is considering temporarily easing the national curfew for minors during the 2025 Carnival season, Attorney General Sir Steadroy ‘Cutie’ Benjamin has confirmed.
Speaking on state media, Sir Steadroy said officials are reviewing the current 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. restriction to allow minors to participate in late-night Carnival events, including the Teenage Pageant and various children’s shows.
“This is a time for celebration,” he said. “We have to be realistic. The curfew will be relaxed for this season, but the law remains in force and will continue to be enforced after Carnival.”
The curfew was introduced in 2024 under an amendment to the Small Charges Act and holds parents or guardians liable for fines of up to EC$5,000 if minors are found in violation. It was part of broader efforts by the government to curb violent crime and anti-social behavior among youth.
The proposed relaxation has sparked mixed reactions, with some members of the public expressing concern over potential safety risks during the July 25 to August 5 festivities, which will take place under the theme ‘It’s a Vibe’.
