United Kingdom commits £10 million to Grenada’s green energy transition efforts

The United Kingdom has announced a £10 million funding package to support Grenada’s Geothermal Energy Development Project, aimed at exploring and harnessing the island’s geothermal energy potential. The announcement was made by UK Minister for Latin America and the Caribbean, Baroness Chapman, during a meeting in St. George’s, the capital of Grenada.

This investment is focused on resource testing, including the drilling of exploratory wells, to assess the potential for geothermal electricity generation in Grenada. The project aims to help the country reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, contributing to a more sustainable energy future that is powered by locally sourced renewable energy.

Baroness Chapman highlighted the project’s significance, stating that it would lower energy costs for households and businesses, which would be a major boost to Grenada’s economy. Additionally, the shift to geothermal energy is expected to reduce carbon emissions, aligning with global goals for climate change mitigation.

This initiative is a crucial step toward sustainable energy development for Grenada, supporting the country in its efforts to transition to cleaner energy and lessen its environmental impact.

Grenadian Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell expressed his gratitude for the UK’s support in funding Grenada’s Geothermal Energy Development Project. He emphasized the significance of the investment, stating, “This funding will allow us to assess the geothermal potential of Grenada and take further steps towards building a clean, sustainable, and more affordable energy system.”

Prime Minister Mitchell’s remarks underscore the importance of this initiative in helping Grenada transition to renewable energy. The geothermal project aligns with the country’s broader goals of reducing reliance on fossil fuels and advancing energy sustainability while also ensuring energy becomes more affordable for households and businesses. The funding not only marks a significant step in Grenada’s energy transformation but also demonstrates international collaboration in promoting climate-friendly energy solutions.
