Suriname’s President Chandrikapersad Santokhi is taking decisive steps to address the recent surge in criminal activities, reassuring citizens that his administration is committed to creating a safe environment for their prosperity.
In a meeting on Monday, President Santokhi convened with key government officials and security agencies, including Vice President Ronnie Brunswijk, Chairman of the National Assembly Marinus Bee, Minister of Justice and Police Kenneth Amoksi, Minister of Defense Krishna Mathoera, and senior officials from the Suriname Police Force.
Together, they discussed the pressing issue of escalating crime rates across the Dutch-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country.
Commitment to citizen safety
President Santokhi emphasized the urgent need for a new approach to tackle the growing threat of crime.
“We are committed to creating a safe environment in which our citizens can thrive,” he declared, acknowledging the gravity of the situation.
Government vows action
The state-owned Suriname Communications Service reported that President Santokhi has directed stakeholders to intensify their efforts in bringing the situation under control and ensuring the safety of all citizens.
“We are committed to continuing our efforts to fight crime, maintain order and create a safe environment in which our citizens can thrive. That is why we will go to the maximum until we have guaranteed this,” President Santokhi affirmed.
Stepping up security measures
Minister of Justice and Police Kenneth Amoksi echoed the president’s sentiments, highlighting the necessity of decisive action.
He announced plans for stricter measures, including an increase in roadblocks and a tightening of the country’s immigration policy.
“You don’t fight crime alone, we need the community,” Minister Amoksi stressed, emphasizing the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders.
