The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Commission, headquartered in St. Lucia, has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to forging sustainable pathways to address environmental and developmental hurdles in the Caribbean.
A focal point of concern has been the intermittent inundation of the region’s beaches by the foul-smelling brown sargassum algae, which poses significant threats to marine life, tourism, and the livelihoods tethered to the blue economy.
Embarking on a journey of exploration and learning
Embarking on a mission to convert challenges into opportunities, representatives from the OECS undertook a study tour, collaborating with the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland and AlgalTek, a company specializing in algae production.
Guided by Ambassador Colin Murdoch from the OECS Mission in Geneva, the team immersed themselves in an enlightening experience aimed at harnessing the potentials of sargassum algae.
Navigating the realms of innovation and technology
The engagement with the Paul Scherrer Institute, renowned for its excellence in natural and engineering sciences, and AlgalTek, a pioneer in the sustainable transformation of algae biomass into a myriad of products, marked a significant stride toward ecological innovation.
The commission noted that AlgalTek’s prowess lies in crafting high-caliber products ranging from foods and cosmetics to packaging materials, employing environmentally congenial practices.

Unlocking the potentials of Sargassum algae
The commission further said that the participants were privy to a spectrum of innovative methodologies pivotal for the effective management and utilization of sargassum algae.
They delved deep into exploratory learning, discovering various processing techniques that unravel the diverse components of the algae for an array of applications, such as pigments, proteins, and bioplastics.
The hands-on exposure facilitated a comprehensive understanding of modern collection methods, opening avenues for discussions on the potential export prospects of sargassum algae for the OECS region.
The OECS groups the islands of Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, St Kitts-Nevis, Montserrat, Anguilla, and the British Virgin Islands.
