Jamaica’s Minister of Education and Youth, Hon. Fayval Williams, has reaffirmed the ministry’s dedication to protecting children’s welfare.
The ministry collaborates with the Children’s Affairs Policy Division and the Child Protection and Family Services Agency (CPFSA) to enhance public understanding of children’s rights.
Their efforts focus on empowering children, celebrating their achievements, engaging them positively, raising awareness of their challenges, and outlining steps to mitigate these issues.
Strategic collaborations for child advocacy
The Ministry’s strategies are implemented in partnership with the National Child Month Committee (NCMC).
Minister Williams shared these insights during the National Church Service at Saxthorpe Methodist Church in Kingston, marking the commencement of Child Month 2024.
The chosen theme for this year, ‘Stand up! Speak out! Protect the Rights of our Children’, encapsulates the month’s objectives.
A call to action for community involvement
Highlighting the crucial role of community members, including parents, guardians, and relatives, Minister Williams emphasized their collective responsibility in nurturing and protecting children, who represent the future of the nation.
Empowering the youth through engaging activities
A variety of events have been planned to engage the community and promote child welfare.
These include the National Child Online Protection Forum, focusing on safeguarding children in digital spaces, and the Child Conversation – Special Edition, tailored for children with special needs.
Additional events include the Wellness Bench Lyme – a collaborative effort with the Ministry of Health and Wellness, the Child Month Poster Competition aimed at children in state care, and a Child Management Day where children shadow professionals at CPFSA.
Promoting awareness through digital campaigns
One significant initiative is the ‘31 Days of Children’s Rights’ campaign, launched across the Ministry’s social media platforms.
This campaign is designed to spread crucial information about children’s rights throughout the month.

As Child Month progresses, the Ministry encourages all Jamaicans to participate in these events and continue their advocacy for children’s well-being.
Through these collective efforts, the Ministry aims to ensure a safer, more inclusive environment for all children, fostering their development and safeguarding their rights.
