At a recent Diplomatic Day event, Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith, underscored the crucial role of the United Nations (UN) in tackling escalating global conflicts and uncertainties while championing economic advancement.
Minister Johnson Smith highlighted the pressing need for UN reform amid mounting challenges.
She emphasized Jamaica’s steadfast support for the UN and its commitment to multilateralism as the most rational approach to addressing global issues.
Stressing the importance of respecting international law, including sovereignty and territorial integrity, she reiterated Jamaica’s call for adherence to fundamental principles in international affairs.
Global concerns and regional vigilance
Expressing deep concern over ongoing conflicts, Minister Johnson Smith condemned the war in Ukraine, attacks on Israel, and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
She also affirmed Jamaica’s vigilance regarding regional developments, particularly in relation to Guyana.
Climate change imperatives
Turning to the critical issue of climate change, Minister Johnson Smith warned that without adequate financing, the goals of the Paris Agreement would remain elusive, posing a significant threat to Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
She applauded COP28’s decision to operationalize the Loss and Damage Fund and urged both emerging and developed economies to fulfill their commitments under the Paris Agreement and the UAE Consensus.
Combating illicit arms trafficking
Addressing the grave issue of small arms and light weapons trafficking, Minister Johnson Smith called for collective action from all nations.
She emphasized the detrimental impact of crime and violence on socio-economic progress and reiterated Jamaica’s commitment to combating this scourge through international cooperation.
Highlighting the importance of assistance in curbing the influx of illegal arms, she underscored Jamaica’s support for initiatives like the Mexican case against major gun manufacturers.
Progress and ongoing efforts
Minister Johnson Smith outlined Jamaica’s legislative strides, including the Firearms (Prohibition, Restriction, and Regulation) Act and the modernized Bail Act, aimed at bolstering security measures.
She emphasized ongoing efforts to strengthen port security and maritime border control, alongside crime prevention programs, while acknowledging that more work remains to be done in this regard.
