The Government of Jamaica is steadfast in its commitment to providing reliable potable water supplies to residents across the island.
Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, emphasized this dedication during a ground-breaking ceremony for a pipeline installation project in Retreat, St. Ann, on June 21.
New projects to boost water supply
At the event, Prime Minister Holness highlighted the role of Senator the Hon. Matthew Samuda, Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, in overseeing water-related projects.
He mentioned that Senator Samuda will be commissioning new pipelines almost weekly in various communities across the island.
The $29-million pipeline installation project from Brown’s Town to Retreat, St. Ann, and the refurbishment of the Minard Well, which has served the community for over 40 years, are central to these efforts.
The refurbishment of the well is being undertaken at a cost of $60.7 million and will be instrumental in channeling water to the Enfield, Lyndale, Retreat, and Brown’s Town communities.
Sustainable solutions for water needs
The Minard Well project is expected to provide a sustainable solution to the water needs of these areas, significantly improving their access to clean water.
The Prime Minister expressed the Government’s intention to extend the National Water Commission’s supply network as far as possible, with weekly developments in water infrastructure.
Impact on local communities
The completion of the Retreat pipeline installation project is projected to benefit over 1,500 residents in several areas by providing them with access to piped water.
The project is set to be completed within three months from the date of the ground-breaking ceremony.

Senator Samuda underscored the Government’s proactive approach to infrastructure development and public welfare.
He emphasized that access to clean water is a fundamental human right, and the Government’s investment in water infrastructure reflects its commitment to the well-being and prosperity of all Jamaican citizens.
By prioritizing projects like the Brown’s Town-to-Retreat pipeline installation, the Government is addressing the challenges faced by communities that have long grappled with water scarcity.
