In a move aimed at fortifying its border defenses, the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) is set to receive a significant financial injection of approximately $1 billion.
This allocation, detailed in the 2024/25 Estimates of Expenditure recently presented in the House of Representatives by Minister of Finance and the Public Service, Dr. Nigel Clarke, underscores the nation’s commitment to bolstering its security infrastructure.
Strengthening surveillance capabilities
The infusion of funds will primarily be directed toward final contractual payments, marking the culmination of the procurement process for crucial coastal surveillance equipment.
This equipment, integral to the Purchase and Overhaul of Ships/Coastal Surveillance project, is pivotal in enhancing the JDF’s ability to monitor and safeguard Jamaica’s borders effectively.
Comprehensive security initiative
Initiated in 2018, the Purchase and Overhaul of Ships/Coastal Surveillance project has been a multifaceted endeavor, aimed at equipping the JDF with state-of-the-art resources for border protection.
The procurement efforts encompass a diverse array of assets, including radar systems, marine offshore patrol vessels, cameras, software, hardware, and other essential equipment.
Milestones achieved
As of December 2023, significant progress has been made, with the acquisition of three marine patrol vessels marking a notable milestone in the project’s timeline.
These vessels, equipped with advanced surveillance capabilities, are poised to play a pivotal role in enhancing Jamaica’s maritime security posture.
Targeted completion
Funded through the Consolidated Fund and falling under the purview of the Ministry of National Security, the Purchase, and Overhaul of Ships/Coastal Surveillance project is slated for completion in July 2024.
