Beenie Man has been a pivotal figure in spreading Jamaican music and culture globally. Despite his influence and trailblazing, the artiste feels that the Jamaican government has not adequately recognized his contributions.

The politics of recognition

The artiste shared that he suspects that politics may be influencing the government’ s decisions to overlook him for prestigious honors.

Speaking on The Fix podcast, he expressed that though he has received a Prime Minister’s Award in the past, under the tenure of former PM PJ Patterson, he has not been granted any higher accolades.

He finds this absence of acknowledgment from his home country as deeply disrespectful.

The controversy of who gets honored

The artiste pointed out that those who came in the industry after him such as Sizzla and Assassin, have received national awards, further exacerbating his feelings of neglect.

Beenie Man perceives this as an affront to his career, especially when he finds himself performing at events where these artists are being celebrated.
