Calabar alumni across diaspora donate J$1.7M to honor teachers

In a heartfelt gesture of unity and gratitude, alumni chapters of Calabar High School from across the globe have joined forces with the Calabar Old Boys Association (COBA) in Jamaica and the school’s Parent Teachers’ Association (PTA) to celebrate the educators and support staff of their alma mater during Teacher Appreciation Week 2025.

Representing chapters in Washington, DC, New York, Atlanta, Toronto, the United Kingdom, and Florida, the international alumni network has pledged more than JMD $1.7 million to fund stipends and a celebratory luncheon for Calabar’s faculty, guidance counselors, administrative team, and ancillary staff.

“We’re proud to continue this tradition of support,” said Michael McPherson, head of the Washington, DC Chapter. “Our teachers are more than just educators—they’re mentors, role models, and a daily source of strength and inspiration for our youth. We are honored to acknowledge their tireless work and lifelong impact.”

Karl Thompson, President of the Florida Chapter, echoed this sentiment: “Teachers are the backbone of any society. This gesture is just a small token of our immense appreciation for their dedication, especially through today’s many challenges. We will always stand with our educators.”

Shaun Abrahams, president of the New York Chapter, added, “For this initiative, you can definitely count on us in New York.”

David Anderson, President of the Atlanta Chapter, noted the wider impact of teachers: “We welcome every opportunity to celebrate and uplift our teachers. Their influence extends far beyond the classroom, shaping the future of Jamaica one student at a time.”

In Jamaica, the initiative was met with strong support from Calabar’s PTA. “The PTA is honored to partner with COBA and the alumni chapters to recognize our hardworking teachers,” said George Stewart, PTA President. “They face daily challenges with resilience and passion, and we’re proud to stand with them—not just this week, but every day.”

COBA Jamaica president Major Desmon Brown summed up the significance of the effort: “It’s not just about the gift—it’s about the message we send. We see you, we value you, and we thank you for everything you do to shape future leaders.”

The initiative continues a proud tradition of alumni giving back to the Kingston-based school, reinforcing the legacy of excellence and unity that defines the Calabar community.
