A family history of breast cancer

Anderson’s family history of breast cancer had long cast an ominous shadow over her life.  Yet, when symptoms appeared, like relentless itching that intensified under the sun, she brushed them off as mere allergies.

Speaking with the Caribbean National Weekly (CNW), she shared that altering her diet and attempting detox failed to bring relief. It was the discovery of a lump and an unfamiliar hardness in her breast that hinted at the possibility of breast cancer.

Anderson’s wake-up call

Though she suspected something was wrong, the tragic loss of her uncle and a dear friend really propelled her to seek medical attention.

Unfortunately, the results from her mammogram necessitated further tests, including ultrasounds, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), and a biopsy.

Anxious about the outcome, Anderson told CNW that she evaded the doctor’s calls for a month, as she was unwilling to face her fears. But on October 19, 2022, the truth was revealed through a poignant phone call.

A mammogram, two ultrasounds, two MRIs, and a biopsy confirmed the diagnosis – Stage 2, grade 3 breast cancer.

The grueling journey

On November 4th, Anderson’s arduous treatment journey began with six rounds of chemotherapy.

“I felt like I was going to die,” she said as she reflected on the agony she endured.

She vividly recalls the loss of her “luscious dreadlocks” from chemo, along with the physical and emotional battle against weight gain, discoloration of her nails,  loss of taste, and depression, among other symptoms.

By April of this year, she faced one of the most daunting trials on her path – a double mastectomy.

She openly shared that the loss of her breasts, a significant part of a woman’s identity has affected her emotionally. She expressed that there are days when the sight of her scars brings a storm of conflicting emotions, reminding her of the profound changes her body has endured.

In addition to this emotional turbulence, she grappled with days of excruciating pain that left her immobilized. Simultaneously, financial worries began to mount as bills piled up, and the weight of her son’s education became overwhelming, compounded by her inability to work for six long months.

A mother’s pain

Her responsibility as a single mother while navigating a divorce intensified her struggle. Every glance at her 7-year-old young son was tinged with the heart-wrenching fear of leaving him motherless.

“You’re no fun, you’re always sleeping, you’re always sick,” her son would lament.

His innocent remarks about her constant illnesses cut deep, a painful reminder of how her condition was affecting others around her.

Anderson also shared that she endured days when her appearance became the subject of ridicule, leading to her son being targeted by bullies at school due to her bald head – a look she tried to embrace during her battle.

She eventually resorted to hats and wigs as a shield, but her steadfast friends continued to remind her to embrace her journey and her natural appearance as she fought the disease.

Strength in faith and community

In the face of her pain and adversity, Anderson decided to challenge those who doubted her strength and resist allowing her fears to dominate her.

Remarkably, she undertook the challenge of maintaining a positive outlook while battling the disease which was driven by her deep commitment to her son.

However, this inner strength could not have flourished without the unwavering support of her friends and family.

When she looked back on her path to recovery, she conveyed her heartfelt appreciation to her friends, who played a crucial role as pillars of strength during her most trying moments.

As a devoted Christian, she also sought solace in her faith, finding comfort in the reassuring words of the Bible.

The support and strength provided by her loved ones, enabled this once fearful Jamaican woman to transform into a beacon of resilience, advocating for breast cancer awareness.

Today, Anderson is fully committed to raising awareness about breast cancer and is gearing up for reconstructive surgery in December.

On October 10, 2023, she was a source of inspiration and motivation for numerous women in Jamaica during a virtual breast cancer awareness event.

She spoke of the importance of doing early mammograms and other medical examinations, particularly for those with a family history of the disease.

“Take care of yourself now because you don’t know if you’ll have a future,” she advised, reiterating the importance of taking proactive steps to save their lives.

She also emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive mindset and encouraged Christians to turn to faith and prayer.

For numerous women, the prospect of undergoing breast cancer screening, like mammograms, might appear daunting, but as Anderson emphasized, fear should never dissuade anyone from prioritizing their health.

Her personal experience serves as a poignant reminder that early detection and resolute determination can triumph over breast cancer. Shanica Anderson is not just a survivor; she is a warrior.
