Service animals are permitted in General Population Shelters so long as the pet meets the requirements under Federal law. Visit ADA Requirements for Service Animals for additional information. The Pet-Friendly Shelter is available for residents owning pets that are not considered service animals that live in evacuation areas or mobile homes. Pre-registration is required. Please note, owner access to pets may be limited at times during the emergency. Owners will be sheltered at Challenger Elementary School. Pets will be sheltered at Millennium Middle School. Facilities are adjacent. To register, call the Humane Society at 954-989-3977.

 

Four hurricane shelters were open in Miami-Dade ahead of Irma, including one for your pets.

The shelters opened by the county are:

 

North Miami Beach Senior High, 1247 NW 167th St., North Miami Beach

South Miami Senior High, 6856 SW 53rd St., South Miami

Felix Varela Senior High, 15255 SW 96th St., Miami (in the West Kendall area)

The Miami-Dade County Fair and Exhibition, home to the Youth Fair at Tamiami Park, 10901 Coral Way, Miami. This is the shelter that is also accepting pets, and visitors should enter through Gate 2.

The fairgrounds shelter will accept dogs and cats, as well as any pets in a cage.
