“Foul play is not ruled out,” said acting Assistant Commissioner James Howard.

The news came hours after the mother of the 19-year student, a freshman at St Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, made a heartfelt plea for the safe return of her son.

Body found in Fort Prospect

But, police announced his body had been found in the moat at Fort Prospect on the outskirts of Hamilton, the island’s capital on Monday.

The teenager had been due to leave the island with his parents on Sunday and Premier David Burt described it as “the saddest possible news”

Heartfelt condolences

“I know that I speak for all of Bermuda in expressing our heartfelt condolences to the Dombroski family at such a devastating loss. This young man was full of promise and this tragic end to his life will be mourned by his teammates and friends in Pennsylvania.

In the difficult days ahead, my hope is that his family will draw strength from the memories of his life and comfort in knowing that the people of Bermuda continue to extend their thoughts and prayers across the seas.”

The student was last seen at the Dog House pub on Front Street, Hamilton on Sunday. Police said he was captured on closed-circuit TV heading east on Middle Road in Devonshire, the opposite direction from where he was staying at Warwick Camp, headquarters of the Royal Bermuda Regiment, which often accommodates visiting sportsmen.

Dombroski came to the island on a rugby tour with St Joseph’s University to play in the Ariel Re Bermuda International Rugby Sevens at National Sports Centre’s North Field over the weekend.
