The Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ) has emphasized the crucial importance of prioritizing the upskilling of local employees, including those within the burgeoning business process outsourcing (BPO) sector.

Dr. Wayne Henry, the Director General of PIOJ, has put forward this suggestion in response to ongoing discussions surrounding the potential recruitment of migrant workers to address labor shortages in certain industries.

Local workforce empowerment

Dr. Henry acknowledges that meaningful dialogues are currently underway regarding the development and upskilling of local workers.

He noted that several initiatives and programs are already in motion, primarily within the tourism and BPO sectors. These initiatives aim to provide comprehensive training and certification opportunities within the labor market.

To reinforce his perspective, Dr. Henry recommends an intensified focus on these ongoing training and certification initiatives.
