In a bid to fortify the longstanding bond between Jamaica and The Bahamas, Jamaica’s Minister of Local Government and Community Development, Hon. Desmond McKenzie, vows to deepen collaboration between the two nations.
In an interview with JIS News on Tuesday, Minister McKenzie underscored the historical ties between Jamaica and The Bahamas, tracing back to the aftermath of Hurricane Gilbert.
He highlighted The Bahamas’ pivotal assistance during that trying period as a testament to the enduring solidarity between the two countries.
Joint relief efforts
Moreover, Minister McKenzie emphasized the collaborative efforts between Jamaica and The Bahamas in providing relief aid to neighboring nations in distress.
Notably, the HMBS Lawrence Major, operated by the Royal Bahamas Defence Force, played a crucial role in transporting essential supplies to St. Vincent and the Grenadines following the eruption of the La Soufrière volcano in 2021.
Strengthening regional partnerships
Asserting Jamaica’s role as a regional focal point for The Bahamas, Haiti, and the Turks and Caicos Islands, Minister McKenzie expressed his determination to enhance bilateral relations further.
He outlined plans for reciprocal visits to foster dialogue and exchange insights, aiming to bolster mutual understanding and cooperation.
Shared commitment to disaster preparedness
Echoing Minister McKenzie’s sentiments, Bahamian Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister, Hon. Leon Lundy, emphasized The Bahamas’ dedication to reinforcing ties with Jamaica.
Minister Lundy stressed the importance of solidarity in confronting common challenges, particularly in disaster preparedness, reflecting the shared aspirations of both nations.
