Barbados enhances road lighting with donation of solar lamps from China

Barbados is set to illuminate its roads more brightly, following a donation of 180 solar lamps from Hunan Province in the People’s Republic of China to the Ministry of Transport and Works (MTW).

The formal Handover Agreement for Donating Solar Lamps was signed on Monday, April 22, 2024, during a significant courtesy call on Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Works, Santia Bradshaw. 

Representing the Hunan Provincial People’s Government of China, Governor Mao Weiming and his accompanying delegation were present to finalize the agreement.

Strengthening bilateral relations

Minister Bradshaw, during the meeting, highlighted the enduring bond between Barbados and China, expressing gratitude for the various areas of cooperation between the two nations. 

She emphasized the significance of the solar lamp donation, signaling yet another opportunity for deepening bilateral relations.

Addressing critical infrastructure needs

Recognizing the critical role of street lighting in road infrastructure, Minister Bradshaw emphasized how the solar lamps would enhance road safety across the island. 

She thanked Hunan Province for their support, emphasizing the broader benefits to both Barbadians and visitors.

Building on existing collaborations

Minister Bradshaw underscored that the MTW’s collaboration with China is not new, citing previous projects such as the Scotland District Road Rehabilitation, funded by a BDS $230 million loan from the Exim Bank of China. 

Additionally, she mentioned the upcoming donation of 50 electric buses from China, highlighting ongoing bilateral cooperation in transportation.

Exploring renewable energy opportunities

Governor Mao Weiming highlighted the potential for further collaboration in renewable energy, recognizing Barbados’ capacity for solar and wind energy development. 

He proposed close monitoring of the solar lights’ installation in one district as a basis for future cooperation in this area.

Strengthening ties through formal agreements

The Handover Agreement was formalized with the signing by Andrew Gittens, Permanent Secretary of MTW, and Xu Zhengxian, Director General of the Foreign Affairs Office, Hunan Provincial People’s Government. 

The presence of Dr. Romel Springer, Parliamentary Secretary of MTW, and Tyrone White, Chief Electrical Officer of GEED, underscored the significance of the occasion.

Diverse delegation from China

The Chinese delegation comprised the Secretary-General of Hunan Provincial People’s Government, Qu Hai; the Director General, Department of Finance of Hunan Province, Liu Wenjie; the Director-General of the Department of Commerce of Hunan Province, Shen Yumou, and the Division Chief General Office of Hunan Provincial Government, Wang Kai.
