Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Kerrie Symmonds and CIDCA’s Chairman Luo Zhaohui sealed the agreement, marking a pivotal moment in Barbados’ quest to transition away from fossil fuels.

This agreement follows Barbados’ request for the donation of electric buses from China, aimed at reducing the island’s carbon footprint.

Progress in assessment and approval

According to a statement from the Barbados Government Information Service, specifications for the electric buses have already been submitted, and Chinese authorities are currently evaluating the request.

The signing of the Exchange of Notes signifies a crucial step forward in the acquisition process.

CIDCA’s role in foreign aid

CIDCA, established in March 2018, plays a vital role in formulating strategic guidelines for foreign aid and coordinating major aid initiatives.

With a focus on advancing reforms and identifying key programs, CIDCA’s involvement underscores China’s commitment to supporting Barbados’ sustainable development goals.

Strengthening diplomatic relations

Minister Symmonds and Chairman Zhaohui emphasized the enduring diplomatic ties between Barbados and China during their bilateral discussions.

They expressed mutual interest in deepening engagement across various sectors, including initiatives such as the Bridgetown Initiative and the Global Development Initiative.
