Conagra Brands, Inc., an American consumer packaged goods firm, has issued a recall for several brands of canned Vienna sausages as a result of a packaging defect.
The announcement was made by the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) earlier this week.
It is said the items may become tainted without presenting any obvious sign of contamination.
According to Conagra, the recall covered about 2,581,816 pounds of canned meat and poultry products, with recalled brands including Grace Kennedy, Armour, Great Value, Kroger, Goya, Prairie Belt, and Hargis House.
The FSIS said in a statement that the products subject to recall display the establishment number “P4247” on the cans.
It is reported that Conagra informed FSIS after discovering spoiled and/or leaky cans from multiple production dates at the establishment’s warehouse.
According to the agency, an investigation by the establishment determined that the cans subject to recall may have been damaged in a way that was not easily evident to customers. This it said would allow food-borne pathogens to infiltrate the cans.
However, the FSIS said there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of the products.
“Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider,” FSIS said.
Amid concerns, FSIS is advising consumers not to ingest certain goods that may be on retail shelves or in their pantries, stating that they should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
