Broward County commuters now have a new option for traveling throughout the county. On June 23, county officials gathered for the grand opening of the new Lauderhill Transit Center located in front of the Lauderhill Mall, on Highway 441 north of Sunrise Boulevard.

The $10.2 million project, which has been in the works since 2006, is expected to serve about 8,000 customers daily. Broward County Transit says the vibrant colors used on the building represent Lauderhill’s diverse community, which is made up of thousands of Caribbean-Americans.

Present during the ceremony were Broward County Dale Holness, Lauderhill Vice Mayor Denise Grant and Commissioner Melissa Dunn, who are all Jamaican. Also at the ceremony was Broward County Vice Mayor Michael Udine who boosted about some of the amenities at the facility.

“This building is not just pleasing to the eye. This transit center offers more of everything for our community. More transit customer conveniences, a more secure experience, more passenger amenities, and even a kiss and ride lane,” he said.

Broward County Commissioner Dale Holness said transit riders had zero bathroom options near the Lauderhill Mall before the new facility. “We fixed that,” he said.

The 3,000 square-foot facility supports ten bus bays to be utilized by both BCT buses and community shuttles for Lauderhill and Lauderdale Lakes. There are also electric vehicle charging stations, and a solar canopy system that generates more electricity than it consumes. Vice Mayor Udine said the new facility is a major positive for Lauderhill.

“I’m proud of this facility. Our entire Board of County Commissioners is proud and our community, in general, is gonna be proud.”

At the new transportation site, residents will also have the option of getting the COVID-19 vaccine. Officials say the location is perfect for a vaccine pop-up site to help the county get to the 70 percent mark by July 4th.
