Back-to-school meal options for students across South Florida

As the new school year approaches, parents in South Florida are preparing for the return of classes and may want to know what meal options will be available to their children in Broward, Miami-Dade, and Monroe counties.

Broward County

Schools in Broward will open on Monday with some important changes regarding school meals. While universal free lunches have ended, parents must now apply for free or reduced-price lunch programs if eligible.

Broward schools will offer “Power Up Menus” for breakfast and lunch, providing a balanced selection including an entrée, grain, fruits, and milk. Broward Schools’ high school students helped hand-pick many of the items that will appear on breakfast and lunch trays.

Breakfast options include:

  • Yogurt cups

  • Cereal

  • Waffles

Lunch choices feature:

  • Fish sticks

  • Chicken nuggets

There will also be a supper menu available for students.

Miami-Dade County

Schools in Miami-Dade start on August 14, offering a full breakfast and lunch menu.

Breakfast meals will include an entrée, cereal, fresh fruit, 100% juice, and milk daily.

Some breakfast items are:

  • Breakfast croissant with ham & cheese

  • Scrambled eggs with chicken patty

  • Toast

  • Vanilla yogurt parfait with diced peaches

Lunch menus will feature an entrée, side salads, vegetables, fresh fruit, juice, and milk.

Lunch items include:

  • Cheeseburgers

  • Chicken tenders

  • Mozzarella cheese sticks

Monroe County

Monroe County schools will open on August 13 with breakfast, lunch, and supper menus available—especially for students in the Upper and Lower Keys.

Breakfast options include:

  • Bagels with cream cheese

  • Mandarin oranges

  • Juice and milk

Lunch offerings include:

  • Chicken nuggets with dinner roll

  • Mashed potatoes with gravy

  • Corn and applesauce

  • Juice and milk
