Eleven events. Eleven facility records. And a cascade of world-class performances that left the crowd at Franklin Field roaring for more.

From bold upsets to breakout wins, Day One of the meet delivered the kind of electricity that only this tour can produce — a high-octane reminder that Grand Slam Track is rewriting the script for global athletics.

Melissa Jefferson-Wooden strikes gold with sub-22 breakthrough

Two-time Slam Champion Melissa Jefferson-Wooden lit up the track in the women’s 200m, notching the biggest victory of her career. Exploding out of the blocks, she never surrendered the lead, stopping the clock at a personal best 21.99 — her first time breaking the elusive 22-second barrier. The performance dethroned Olympic champion Gabby Thomas, who finished second in 22.10.

“I’ve been working on this ever since Miami,” said Jefferson-Wooden, referencing her third-place finish at the previous Slam. “I knew if I wanted to win, I had to get out, get in front, and I controlled the race and let them come get me. And that’s what I did.”

Hurdle shock: Jamal Britt topples Tinch in photo finish

The men’s 110m hurdles ended in fireworks as Jamal Britt, racing unsponsored and unbothered, stunned Cordell Tinch — the fourth-fastest man in history in the event. Britt matched his personal best of 13.08 to edge Tinch by a mere two-hundredths of a second.

“With us, anything can happen,” said Britt, who has already competed more than 35 times this year. “I would say this is the best generation of hurdlers, and I’m happy that I’m in it.”

Ackera Nugent ends Sydney’s streak in 100m hurdles thriller

In one of the day’s most anticipated showdowns, world champion Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone stepped down to the 100m hurdles — and was handed her first individual defeat since June 2023. Ackera Nugent, the defending Slam Champion, held her nerve and claimed victory in 12.44 seconds, edging out Tia Jones (12.60). McLaughlin-Levrone placed fifth in 12.70 seconds.

“I had to turn my excitement off and just lock myself into space,” said Nugent, who admitted to being starstruck. “She’s very competitive no matter what she does.”

“It felt really good, felt fun, felt fast,” McLaughlin-Levrone added. “But I think the hurdle technique and just how quick they were coming up on me — I had to make some adjustments.”

She returns Sunday for her first professional 100m flat race.

Anna Cockrell rules the 400m hurdles

Making her Grand Slam debut, Olympic silver medalist Anna Cockrell surged from lane eight to take the women’s 400m hurdles title in 54.04 seconds. She dominated the race, finishing more than half a second ahead of Jasmine Jones (54.65).

“It’s a historic venue,” said Cockrell of Franklin Field. “It’s so fun running in front of a really, really engaged crowd.”

“Kung-Fu Kenny” still undefeated

In the men’s 200m, Kenny Bednarek lived up to his nickname and reputation. The undefeated Slam superstar coasted to victory in 19.95 seconds, defeating Zharnel Hughes (20.50) by a wide margin and maintaining his perfect 2025 record.

Alison dos Santos, another Slam unbeaten, barely held off Trevor Bassitt in the men’s 400m hurdles. Dos Santos clocked 48.11 seconds, with Bassitt just a hair behind in one of the day’s tightest finishes.

Marco Arop continued his Grand Slam dominance in the men’s 800m, cruising to a win in a season-best 1:43.38 minutes. He left challengers Josh Hoey and Hobbs Kessler behind, even finding time to celebrate before crossing the finish line.

“I know I’ve got a target on my back,” said Arop. “I’m going to have to step it up tomorrow in the 1500m.”

Paulino perfect in 400m

Dominican sprint queen Marileidy Paulino stayed perfect on the Slam circuit, winning the women’s 400m in a blazing 49.12 seconds — her fastest of the season. After sweeping Miami’s long sprint events, Paulino is once again on track for a Slam sweep.

“I prefer the 400 first, and then the 200,” she said. “It obviously shows. It’s working out well for me.”

In the men’s 400m, Matthew Hudson-Smith — the reigning Olympic silver medalist — bounced back from a bumpy season to win his first Slam race of the year. Clocking 44.51 seconds, he powered through the final stretch from lane seven.

“You’re running two races of high quality, back-to-back,” said Hudson-Smith. “There’s a lot of history here so I was excited to race here.”

Women’s distance races deliver historic finishes

The women’s 1500m shattered Grand Slam records as Diribe Welteji dipped under the four-minute mark with a time of 3:58.04 — holding off Jessica Hull by just 0.03 seconds.

In the 3000m, Agnes Ngetich showed why she’s the reigning Slam Champion, using a brilliant final kick to defeat Ejgayehu Taye in 8:43.61 to 8:43.70 minutes. Ngetich now holds consecutive Slam titles in the Women’s Long Distance division.

“I’ve been working on speed,” said Ngetich. “Winning in Miami gave me that energy to push and we’re doing that towards the final Slam in LA.”

With Day One already etched in the record books, Sunday’s action promises even more drama. McLaughlin-Levrone’s 100m debut, Arop’s quest for the middle-distance double, and the relentless charge toward the Los Angeles finale will keep fans riveted.
