Shyne Barrow to step down as Belize opposition leader following election defeat

Moses “Shyne” Barrow has announced his intention to resign as leader of Belize’s Opposition after losing his reelection bid in the country’s recent general elections.

Barrow, who represented the Mesopotamia constituency, conceded defeat to his United Democratic Party (UDP) rival, Lee Mark Chang, following the March 12 election. According to Channel 5 Belize, Barrow secured 318 votes, while Chang won with 601 votes. Speaking at a press conference, Barrow acknowledged the results and extended his best wishes to his successor.

“The people have spoken; congratulations to Lee Mark Chang—he’s now the new area representative of Mesopotamia, and I wish him well,” Barrow said.

Reflecting on the outcome, Barrow admitted that while he was confident in his campaign, he respects the decision made by voters. He confirmed his plans to step down as UDP leader once a national convention is held to elect his replacement.

“I certainly will resign effective once we have a national convention to elect a new leader. Obviously, you can’t be a leader of the United Democratic Party once you’re not a member of the House, and I would not want to be appointed as a senator or anything to hold on to the leadership,” he stated.

Barrow, who gained international fame as a rapper under Sean “Diddy” Combs’ Bad Boy Records label, transitioned to politics after serving a 10-year prison sentence for his involvement in a 1999 nightclub shooting in New York City. Following his release and deportation to Belize in 2009, he was appointed as the country’s Music and Goodwill Ambassador in 2010. A decade later, he successfully ran for office, winning the Mesopotamia seat in 2020 and subsequently becoming leader of the UDP and the Opposition in Belize’s House of Representatives.

During his tenure as Opposition Leader, Barrow was vocal on issues such as crime reduction, economic reform, and youth empowerment. He advocated for stronger anti-corruption measures and sought to modernize Belize’s governance structure. His leadership of the UDP was marked by efforts to revitalize the party and appeal to younger voters, though internal party conflicts and shifting political dynamics proved to be ongoing challenges.

Barrow recently reflected on his dual careers in music and politics in his documentary The Honorable Shyne. With his departure from leadership, the UDP will now prepare for internal elections to determine its next leader.
