Greenwood eyes England talks before deciding on Jamaica move—Reports

Reports suggest that Mason Greenwood, currently with Olympique Marseille, intends to have a conversation with incoming England manager Thomas Tuchel before making a final decision on his international future.

Greenwood is weighing up whether to stick with England or commit to Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz.

According to The Sun, Greenwood is hopeful that Tuchel’s arrival in January might provide him with an opportunity to revive his chances with the England national team. However, if this doesn’t materialize, Greenwood is expected to take up the offer extended by Jamaica’s head coach, Steve McClaren, to represent the Caribbean nation.

It was reported earlier in August that Greenwood had started the paperwork to switch allegiances to Jamaica, though this process has not been officially finalized.

A shadow over his future with England

Greenwood’s international career has been uncertain since he faced serious charges of attempted rape, assault, and coercive behavior in January 2022. Those charges were dropped, but they have cast a shadow over his future with England.

A source quoted by The Sun explained that while Greenwood is aware that his chances of playing for England are slim, he is keen to pursue the possibility of competing in the World Cup. “Mason understands that his odds of being called up for England again are low, but he wants to hear directly from the FA and Tuchel now that there’s a change. His ambition is to play at the highest level, and the World Cup is his goal. If England isn’t an option, he’ll shift his focus to Jamaica and aim for the 2026 World Cup through that route.”

Greenwood qualifies to play for Jamaica through his father, who was born on the island. The Reggae Boyz last made it to the World Cup in 1998, and Greenwood’s addition could be a significant boost as they look to qualify for the 2026 tournament.
