Amari’i Bell, the Jamaican international defender, has expressed his joy at returning to the Reggae Boyz squad after an extended injury layoff, eager to make his mark both for his national team and club after a challenging period in his career.
The hamstring injury sustained in March during a Premier League match for his club, Luton Town, against Aston Villa, prematurely ended his season and forced him to miss key international competitions, but now, after months of rehabilitation, Bell is once again ready to don the iconic black, green, and gold of Jamaica.
“It feels amazing to be back,” Bell said, reflecting on his return to the Reggae Boyz setup. “It’s been a long time now, but I’m happy to be here. It was a big injury, one of my first in my career, so mentally it was hard to get back in a good place. I’ve been through the rough patch, but I’m feeling good and in good spirits.”
Bell’s injury came at a particularly difficult time, causing him to miss the semi-finals of the CONCACAF Nations League and the 2024 Copa América. Despite being named in the squad for the Copa América under then-head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson, Bell was eventually ruled unfit to play, missing a key opportunity to represent Jamaica on the international stage.
Unfinished business
“I was up in the early hours watching the games, cheering on the team from afar,” Bell shared. “It was great to see us finish third in the Nations League. I was gutted I couldn’t be there for the celebrations because it was a proud moment for everyone. Participating in the Copa América was also a great achievement for the team, even though we didn’t perform as well as we hoped. But it’s all part of the journey.”
Now back to full fitness, Bell has already featured three times for Luton Town in the English Football League (EFL) Championship, and his focus is set on returning to the Premier League, where he feels he has “unfinished business.” His immediate priority, however, is Jamaica’s upcoming matches in the CONCACAF Nations League.
Bell is determined to help his national team improve on their previous third-place finish and is confident in the squad’s ability to go all the way. “Obviously, the plan is to go one step better this time and win it,” Bell stated. “There’s no reason why we can’t do it. Everyone believes in ourselves and what we can do, so we’re going to go for it.”
Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz will face Cuba on Friday at the National Stadium, with a 7 p.m. kickoff, before traveling for an away match against Honduras the following Tuesday.
