Trinidad and Tobago gained independence from the United Kingdom on August 31, 1962, through the Trinidad and Tobago Independence Act of 1962. The act granted the West Indies country full independence within the Commonwealth, with Queen Elizabeth II as the titular head of state. The United States recognized Trinidad and Tobago’s independence on the same day, and also established diplomatic relations with the country.
The country celebrates its independence with a national holiday that includes parades, songs, dances, fireworks, cultural performances, and more. Citizens often dress in the national colors of red, white, and black, and display the national flag. The holiday is a time for Trinidadians and Tobagonians to celebrate their country’s freedom and cultural identity
“As we commemorate Trinidad’s 62nd year of independence, we honor the rich cultural heritage and the resilient spirit of the Trinidadian community here in Miramar. This event is a celebration of our shared values of freedom, unity, and cultural pride. I invite everyone to join us in marking this significant milestone,” stated Commissioner Maxwell B. Chambers.
Join us as we celebrate Trinidad and its vibrant culture with a memorable evening of festivities and community spirit.
