Mexico City, Mexico – Jamaica’s Young Reggae Boyz saw their aspirations for the Youth World Cup in Chile next year extinguished following a disappointing performance at the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship.
The team exited the tournament without securing a win, a point, or even a goal, culminating in a 3-0 defeat to Cuba in their final Group A match at the Estadio Leon in Mexico on Friday.
The Reggae Boyz, who conceded a staggering 15 goals across three matches, entered the game with a faint hope of clinching three points to qualify for the playoffs as one of the two best third-place finishers. However, those hopes were dashed by Cuba’s Michael Camejo Odeja and David Perez, who netted two first-half goals in the 35th and 42nd minutes, respectively. Karel Mendoza sealed the victory for Cuba with a late penalty, ensuring their advancement to the quarter-finals with four points as one of the best third-place teams.
Jamaica had an even start to the match and created the first significant chance, but Nahshon Bolt’s header from a corner went over the bar. Cuba’s first notable attempt came in the 27th minute, but Jamaican goalkeeper Joshua Grant comfortably saved the shot from the edge of the area.

The match took a turn in the 36th minute when Cuba capitalized on Jamaica’s missed penalty shout. Odeja maneuvered skilfully in the box to slot the ball past Grant, putting Cuba ahead. Moments later, Jamaica’s misfortune continued as Grant’s clearance attempt rebounded off his own defender, presenting Perez with an easy goal to make it 2-0.
Jamaica’s Adrian Reid nearly pulled one back with a brilliant free-kick effort just before halftime, but Cuban goalkeeper parried it for a corner. Despite showing more intent after the break, the Reggae Boyz struggled to create clear chances. Late in the second half, a promising pass across the goal eluded three Jamaican players, missing a crucial opportunity to score.
Cuba secured their victory in the 87th minute when Mendoza converted a penalty, finalizing the score at 3-0 and sealing Jamaica’s fate in the tournament.
