The U20 Reggae Boyz are set to face a formidable challenge in their opening game of the CONCACAF Men’s U20 Championships against the United States on Friday.
The match, scheduled for 9 p.m. at the Miguel Alemán Valdez Stadium in Mexico, will see Jamaica pitted against one of the strongest teams in Group A, which also includes Costa Rica and Cuba.
Though the team is eager to begin their campaign with a victory, history is not on their side. The young Reggae Boyz have yet to secure a win against the US in this tournament, with their best result being a 1-1 draw in 1964. Since the inaugural edition in 1962, the two nations have faced each other eight times, with the US leading the head-to-head results with six wins and two draws. Their most recent encounter in 2015 ended in a 2-0 victory for the US, following a 3-0 defeat for Jamaica in 2009.
Squad composed mainly of local talent
Friday’s match will see the Boyz relying heavily on a squad composed mainly of local talent, many of whom have gained experience in the Wray and Nephew-sponsored Jamaica Premier League (JPL). Notably, the squad includes recent senior Reggae Boy call-up Adrian Reid Jr., along with several overseas-based players such as Romain Blake of Chicago Fire and Alexander Bicknell of Portuguese outfit Leixões SC. Fabian Reynolds from Wolverhampton Wanderers also returns to the squad after his goal against Bermuda in the CONCACAF Men’s U20 Qualifiers helped secure Jamaica’s place in the tournament.
Following Friday’s opener against the US, the Boyz will face Costa Rica on Monday and conclude the group stage with a match against Cuba next Thursday. The top two teams from each group, along with the best two third-placed teams, will advance to the quarter-finals. The winners of the quarter-finals will earn a spot in the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.
The young Reggae Boyz are determined to make a mark in this year’s tournament despite the daunting task ahead. A strong performance against the US could set a positive tone for the rest of their campaign and potentially secure their place in the prestigious FIFA U-20 World Cup.
