The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) is set to narrow down its list of over 40 candidates for the Reggae Boyz head coach position to a shortlist of five Monday, according to Rudolph Speid, chairman of the JFF’s technical committee.
This selection process follows the recent resignation of Icelandic coach Heimer Hallgrimmson, who stepped down after a lackluster performance at the Copa América tournament. The JFF aims to appoint a new coach by early August, as initially planned.
Speid detailed that the pool of candidates includes a diverse mix of applicants, recommendations, and coaches directly approached by the JFF. The candidates hail from various regions, including local Jamaican coaches, as well as professionals from South and North America, the Caribbean, Europe, and Australia.
“We have about 40 persons, the majority of them have applied,” Speid told The Gleaner. “Some, we have head-hunted and some were recommended. We have compiled the list and are going through and doing our research. So we have a set of people going through the list, and we will come down to a shortlist of about five. So by tomorrow (Monday), we should be down to five. But it could also be six, depending on if we see real quality out there.”
A thorough vetting process
The shortlisted candidates will undergo a thorough vetting process, with interviews scheduled to commence this week. Once the interviews are completed, the shortlist will be submitted to the JFF board in order of preference. However, the final decision rests with the board.
Speid emphasized that economic considerations and other factors will play a crucial role in the final selection. The affordability of the candidates and their potential contributions to the JFF will be key considerations.
“No matter what we do, there is one thing that can make the deal or not, and that is economics. So we will look at the people that we can afford and what they can bring to the table. Also if they want to carry all of their staff or work with some local staff to make the football beneficial to the Jamaica Football Federation,” Speid explained. “So even though we want to get the best [coach], those things are in consideration before our final decision.”
The JFF is committed to finding a coach who not only fits the financial constraints but also brings valuable expertise and the potential to enhance the national football program.
